Stolmy Stymies Hillcats As Sox Win 2-1

April 13, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Lynchburg, VA (April 13, 2010) - Stolmy Pimentel had his first start wiped out after one inning because of rain, but more than made up for it in his next opportunity. Thanks to five dominant innings, from Pimentel, Salem went on to defeat Lynchburg 2-1 on Tuesday evening at City Stadium. Pimentel orchestrated five stellar frames, permitting just two baserunners on a pair of singles, while dazzling with an array of fastballs, curves, and changes to blow away the Hillcats. The 20-year-old Dominican righthander struck out five and did not walk anyone, offering a glimpse of the superstar potential that many publications had decreed upon him in the preseason. The victory was the fourth in the first five games for the Salem Sox and moved them into sole possession of first place in the Carolina League South.

Offensively, Salem relied upon the continued red-hot hitting of Oscar Tejeda. With three more base knocks, Tejeda has recorded multi-hit efforts in each of his first four games, compiling nine hits in 17 at-bats for a sizzling .529 average. Tejeda led off the third inning with a double and scored the game's first run when Peter Hissey drove him in on a two-out single. Two frames later, Will Middlebrooks, Tejeda, and Mitch Dening all singled to load the bases with one out, and Salem made it 2-0 on Jon Hee's sacrifice fly. Though the Red Sox left Tejeda and Dening aboard, the two runs would suffice on an evening when the pitching was masterful.

Following Pimentel, righthander Jeremy Kehrt arrived from the Red Sox bullpen to take it the rest of the way. Kehrt walked the first man he faced, and Justin Reed scored on a two-out bloop double by Devin Mesoraco to make it 2-1. But the bumpy beginning was an outlier from the rest of the four-inning outing, in which Kehrt struck out three and earned his first save of the season.

Lance Janke was solid for the Hillcats, but suffered the loss after surrendering two runs on six hits over six innings. Lynchburg managed just five hits against Salem pitching and saw their record drop to 2-3.

The Sox and Cats continue their three-game series at City Stadium with a morning contest on Wednesday. The action begins bright and early at 11:05 AM, with righthander Brock Huntzinger set to oppose Lynchburg's lefty Matt Fairel.

Due to the early start time, the game will be broadcast live exclusively on www.salemsox.com and will be re-aired on delay in the Roanoke Valley at 7:05 PM on the Flagship Station for Salem Red Sox Baseball: NewsTalk 960 WFIR.
