Red Sox Take 1-0 Lead Before Monsoon Arrives

April 8, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Woodbridge, VA (April 8, 2010)- Will Middlebrooks singled, scored, and threw a runner out at home plate, all in less than an inning and a half. Sadly, Mother Nature prevented him from doing anything more.

With Salem up 1-0 in the top of the second inning, heavy rains came through northern Virginia, postponing the remainder of the season opener until Friday. The Red Sox and Nationals will resume the contest at 5:30 PM and then play another seven inning game as part of a doubleheader on Friday. The two teams will first complete the full nine innings in the game that has already begun.

By the time the precipitation arrived, the Red Sox had already mustered three hits off Nationals starter Robinson Fabian. Tim Federowicz doubled down the left field line in the top of the first, but was stranded at second. An inning later, Middlebrooks led off with a single, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt, and scored on Mitch Dening's RBI grounder to short. With two outs in the inning, Ryan Dent singled to left field, and remained at first base when the action was stopped with David Mailman at the plate.

Stolmy Pimentel made the start for Salem and overcame some early jitters to toss a scoreless frame. After walking Boomer Whiting to begin the game, Pimentel, aided by his defense, pitched around a pair of baserunners to escape unscathed. The Nats had runners at second and third with one out, but Middlebrooks' fielded a Tyler Moore grounder and gunned down Whiting at home. With two down, Pimentel picked up his first strikeout of the year, whiffing Francisco Plasencia to finish the first frame.

Now, Salem and Potomac will play the better part of four games in three days. Then, following a Monday off-day, the Sox will play three in Lynchburg on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, before heading back to the Roanoke Valley for their home opener on Friday, April 16 against Myrtle Beach.
