Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-Former St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals right-hander Jason Simontacchi and Tim Hamulack, a left-handed reliever who appeared in 39 games with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers, have signed 2010 contracts with the Lancaster Barnstormers, it was announced today by manager Tom Herr.
Simontacchi, 36, was an 11-game winner for the Cards in 2002 and chalked up nine more victories with St. Louis in 2003. After spending time in the Atlantic League with Bridgeport in 2006, the right-hander from California made it back to the big leagues, spending 2007 with the Washington Nationals. He posted a 6-7 record with the Nats that season.
The San Jose State product was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals in 1996 but was released after just two seasons in the lower minors. He made his first trip to independent baseball in 1998, winning 10 games for Springfield in the Frontier League. He was picked up by Pittsburgh for the 1999 season, and, after sitting out all of 2000 with an injury, he jumped to Class AAA Edmonton in the Minnesota organization in 2001. The Cardinals signed him the next season and promoted him to the big league staff after a 5-1 start at Class AAA Memphis.
Hamulack, 33, made it to the Majors in 2005, in his tenth professional season and, technically, his sixth organization. The southpaw from Edgewood, MD was signed by Houston in 1996 and spent four years in the Astros organization before being grabbed by the Kansas City Royals in the 2000 Rule V Draft. One day later, his contract was purchased by the Florida Marlins. Hamulack also passed through the Boston and Seattle systems before finally getting his break with the Mets in 2005. The following year, he appeared in 33 games with the Dodgers and was 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA. He did, however, strike out 34 batters in 34 innings of work.
Last season, Hamulack, back in the Royals organization, was 4-3 with one save and a 5.01 ERA in 41 appearances with Class AAA Omaha.
"Simontacchi gives us a veteran starter who has proven over the years to have the stuff and the savvy to pitch at the highest levels," said Herr. "He should be a real leader for the staff.
"Hamulack is another veteran ML experienced guy who has had success finishing games," Herr added. "He is a hard thrower with good command of three pitches. Right now, he is our projected closer."
With these two signings, the Barnstormers now have 13 players under contract for the 2010 season.
Lancaster will open the 2010 Atlantic League campaign at Long Island on Thursday, April 22. Eight days later, the curtain will rise on the sixth season at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday, April 30 when the Barnstormers host their archrival York Revolution at 7:00 p.m. Season ticket plans are available by calling the ticket office at (717) 509-HITS or by going online to www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their sixth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
