WEEKLY NOTES
Lining Up the W's
The Mudbugs swept three games last weekend to extend their longest winning streak of the season to eight games. The streak has rocketed the 'Bugs to 16 games above .500 (33-17-4) and gotten them within five points of second-place Colorado in the Northern Conference standings. Clinching a playoff spot will be the next order of business for Bossier-Shreveport, who has a magic number of four points to secure one of the top five seed in the North for the 2010 CHL playoffs.
Three Straight Three-in-Threes
This weekend Bossier-Shreveport will play a set of three games in three days for the third consecutive weekend. Yesterday's victory in Tulsa finished off a perfect run of seven games in ten days for the Mudbugs, but the team will have four more tough games this week to cap off an intense period of the schedule. The 'Bugs began a stretch of 11 games in just 17 days back on February 19, with the string finally reaching its end Sunday in Corpus Christi. Then after taking four days off, the Mudbugs will finish with six games over the final eight days of the regular season. Overall, the Mudbugs' last 17 regular season games will take place in a span of just 30 days.
The Oilers Get Drilled
With two more games this past weekend, the Mudbugs and Tulsa Oilers capped off a stretch of four head-to-head meetings in a span of just ten days, with Bossier-Shreveport winning all four of those contests. The 'Bugs are now 5-0 against Tulsa this season and have won 13 consecutive games in the series dating back to last season, when they went 8-0 against the Oilers. Tulsa stood in fifth place and trailed the Mudbugs by only four points in the Northern Conference when they came to Bossier City on February 19, but is now trailing Missouri for the conference's final playoff spot and staring a 14-point deficit to the 'Bugs. The teams will close out their season series on Thursday, March 18 at the CenturyTel Center.
Aikins, Lucas Come Through in the Clutch
Justin Aikins and Tyrel Lucas hooked up on all three game-winning goals as the Mudbugs went 3-0 this past weekend. After the 'Bugs had surrendered a 3-0 lead Friday in Allen, Aikins redirected a shot by Lucas into the net with 3:01 left to put them back on top in a 4-3 win. Saturday in Tulsa, Aikins banged in Lucas' centering pass just 21 seconds into overtime to finish another 4-3 "W". Finally on Sunday, Lucas scored at 6:07 of the third period to put the Mudbugs ahead of the Oilers to stay, with Aikins picking up an assist. Both players have scored three game-winning goals this year.
Pick a Goalie, Any Goalie
Both Mudbugs goaltenders come into this week having won their last four starts, with Ken Carroll and John DeCaro each backstopping four games of the team's current eight-game winning streak. DeCaro (20-11-1) reached the 20-win mark for the third time in his career with 37 saves Saturday and got his first shutout of the year on February 21 against Tulsa. Carroll (13-6-3) stopped 35 shots in a 3-2 victory over the Oilers on Sunday to reach 186 wins in his Mudbugs career. That leaves him just one win shy of tying Tony Martino as the second-winningest goaltender in CHL/WPHL history. Carroll, who already owns the league record for career shutouts, trails only Martino (187) and Rod Branch (194) on the CHL's all-time wins list. He currently leads the league in saves percentage and ranks second in goals-against average.
Offensive Outburst
The Mudbugs have scored at least four goals seven times during their eight-game winning streak, netting 35 total goals for an average of 4.4 goals per game. An increase in scoring over the past three weeks has bumped Bossier-Shreveport into fifth place among the highest scoring teams in the CHL with a season-long average of 3.35 goals per game. Prior to winning ten of their last 11 games, the 'Bugs ranked ninth in the league at 3.14 gpg. At the other end of the ice, Bossier-Shreveport has surrendered fewer than four goals in six straight games.
