Ice Bears Double Up Ice Flyers 6-3

The Ice Flyers couldn't catch the Ice Bears Friday night in Pensacola, falling 6-3. Chris Rebernik scored his fifth goal in three games and the Ice Flyers rallied for goals just nine seconds apart, but it wouldn't be enough to top the Ice Bears.

Knoxville wasted very little time pulling ahead 1-0. Despite being shorthanded the Ice Bears' Mike Bulawka eluded Jamie Gilbert at 5:13 in the first period. Mike Kneeland earned a point on the play as well. 2:25 later Donald Melnyk scored with assists by Randy Johnston and Bulawka. A powerplay aided Tim Vitek in scoring at 13:22, and Kevin Swider and BJ Pelkey assisted too.

Ice Flyers Coach Todd Gordon pulled Gilbert in favor of Ryan Scott following the Vitek shot, and the Ice Flyers rallied back. Joey Hughes sent a centering pass to Erik Stoyanovich at 14:47. Stoyanovich netted the puck and Tyler Barr also earned an assist on the play. Just nine seconds later Chris Rebernik capped a breakaway with his fifth goal in three games. Brian Deeth and Matt Whitehead helped setup Rebernik's goal; it would be the last one of the first period.

Knoxville began the second period the way they started the first: scoring goals. Frank Furdero put up two goals, the first unassisted just 27 seconds into the frame, and the second via Mike Kneeland at 1:56. Pensacola restarted their offense at 8:40 when Matt Whitehead helped Kevin Galan score and bring the Ice Flyers back within two, but an unassisted Kevin Swider strike at 18:47 would give Knoxville a three goal lead into the second intermission.

Despite two powerplays in the third period, the Ice Flyers wouldn't score again. Neither would the Ice Bears, and the 6-3 Knoxville lead went final. The Ice Flyers will hit the road and take on the IceGators in Louisiana tomorrow night. The Ice Flyers next home game is Friday, March 12 at 7:05 p.m. against the Mississippi Surge.
