BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Surge battled back from four separate two-goal deficits and defeated the Fayetteville FireAntz by the score of 6-5 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Friday night.
Fayetteville jumped out to an early lead, converting on its' first two power plays with goals from Steve Cooke at 3:06 of the first period and Jesse Biduke at 4:32. Mississippi's Mike Richard got the Surge on the board at 11:19 of the first, blasting a one-timer through the pads of Fayetteville netminder Guy St. Vincent to draw the Surge within one.
Mississippi continued to play from behind in the second, battling back from two goal deficits twice as they got second period goals from Matthew Larke and Tom Boudreau and entered the third period trailing 4-3.
Chris Leveille gave Fayetteville a two-goal lead for the fourth time at 5:13 of the third period, but Mississippi answered back with three unanswered goals to grab the lead.
At 9:12 of the third, Chris Greene's centering pass found Mike Richard alone in the low slot, and he shoveled the puck into the net for a power-play goal that cut Fayetteville's lead to 5-4. Matt Zultek's power-play marker at 15:31 drew the game even at five-apiece, and just 10 seconds later, Richard completed his hat trick, capitalizing on a giveaway by Fayetteville defenseman Corey Hessler and rifling a shot over the shoulder of Guy St. Vincent at 15:41.
Bill Zaniboni made 26 saves to earn the win, and the Surge power play was 3-for-10.
