Youngstown Phantoms News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Seth Ambroz led the Omaha Lancers' charge Sunday night, totaling two goals and an assist in the home side's 6-1 stifling of the Youngstown Phantoms at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
Fresh off a 2-1 shootout win in Lincoln Saturday night that broke an eight-game losing streak, Youngstown (15-26-2, 32 points) received a first-period goal from Rich Young but could muster no more against an Omaha team that's been at the top of the West Division all season long. The Phantoms and Lancers will square off in a two-game weekend series this Friday and Saturday at Covelli Centre.
Aiming to reclaim the West lead from Fargo, the Lancers (30-12-3, 63 points) leapt ahead right from the start, as Dakota Eveland tossed his own rebound over goalie Matt Mahalak and into the twine just 50 seconds after the opening faceoff with an assist from Ambroz.
Tom Craig increased the Omaha advantage to two goals at 5:08 of the first, as he finished a tic-tac-toe passing play with a sharp one-timer inside the left post from the left faceoff circle. Anthony Hamburg and Camden Wojtala each earned helpers as the Lancers worked the puck around the Youngstown cage.
The Phantoms soon shifted the momentum back to their side about four minutes later, courtesy of Young's deflection in front. Adam Berkle scooped up the puck and rifled it to the net, where Young redirected it through Omaha 'tender John Keeney's legs and over the goal line at 9:01 for a 2-1 score.
Youngstown earned a power play in the closing moments of the first as Ambroz was sent off for elbowing at 17:45, but the Phantoms couldn't forge the tie despite buzzing the Omaha net. When Ambroz was released from the penalty box, he hauled in a Craig lead pass and drove a right-wing wrister past Mahalak with just nine second to go in the period, restoring the Lancers' two-goal edge.
Omaha defenseman Dennis Brown powered in the only goal of the second frame, connecting from the high slot at 12:22 after his initial shot was blocked.
Ambroz added his second of the game to raise the Lancers' lead to 5-1 six minutes into the third. The second-year USHL forward popped in an Eveland feed from the left post to complete a four-man rush led by Greg Wolfe.
Troy Power got a fortunate bounce midway through the final stanza, as Erik Haula's rebound bounced into the Phantoms' net off his lower body.
