Corey Thurman Returns To Revs; Anthony Sullivan Also Signed
February 2, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
(York, Pa.): Fan-favorite, and York resident Corey Thurman has signed to return to the Revolution for a third consecutive season, it was announced today, while hard-throwing right-hander Anthony Sullivan has also been signed to the team's pitching staff. Both deals were announced by Revs Director of Player Procurement Michael Kirk, in conjunction with manager Andy Etchebarren.
Thurman enters the 2010 season as the Revs' all-time leader in strikeouts with 186, innings pitched (250.1), and starts (45), while ranking second in club history in victories with 15. Last season, the former Toronto Blue Jay went 4-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 16 starts. That earned run average would have tied for second best in the league given enough innings to qualify, but a freak ailment forced him to miss much of the second half. Thurman returned to the mound late in the year, allowing just one run in nine innings over two starts in September. Nominated to start the All-Star Game for the Freedom Division, "Thurm" allowed only four homeruns in 85.0 innings all season, while walking just 28 batters and striking out 57.
"I feel so happy, especially since I just got married, to be able to stay in York while I'm playing in the minor leagues," said Thurman. "Obviously I'd like to be in the majors or at least at Triple-A, but if I'm going to play anywhere else in the minor leagues, I want to play in York. It's my home, I love the fans, and I love the city."
Sullivan begins his fifth pro season with tremendous upside potential. Just 25 years old, the right-hander is armed with a fastball that can reach the mid-90s. The Queens, New York native was drafted out of St. John's University by the Los Angeles Angels in 2005. He spent the last two seasons in the Can-Am League with Worcester, posting a 2.57 ERA in 2008, and recording nine saves last year. He owns a 3.81 ERA for his career, and opponents have batted only.228 against him.
"We're very pleased to be able to bring Corey back," said Kirk. "He obviously means a lot to this city, and to this pitching staff. You're not going to find a better teammate or a better leader than Corey. We're also excited to sign Anthony. He comes highly recommended to us, and Etch was impressed with him when he saw him throw. He has a lot of potential."
The Revs now have eight players officially under contract, including three pitchers.
