Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
The weather outside may have been frightful, but inside the Knoxville Civic Coliseum, the Knoxville Ice Bears delighted a hearty crowd to defeat the Louisiana IceGators, 6-2.
The Ice Bears lost against the IceGators in their last meeting on January 2, 2010, and exacted sweet revenge on the struggling new expansion team.
Goalie Chad Collins had 24 saves in his first game as an Ice Bear as the team pelted IceGators goalie, and former Ice Bear, AJ Bucchino with 35 shots on goal.
Bobby Joe Pelkey scored his 13th goal of the season and the first of the first period in an otherwise quiet 20 minutes of play.
Pelkey again lit the lamp one minute into the second period to make it 2-0 Knoxville. IceGators answered back with an even-strength goal with three minutes left in the period. The Ice Bears gathered in front of Bucchino, sent the puck over the red line for the third Knoxville goal of the night, much to the dismay and disagreement of Bucchino. Swider quickly quieted the visiting goalie by getting one past him with just 10 seconds left in the second period, bringing the score to 3-1 Knoxville.
The third period produced lots of action, fighting, goals and more fighting. Louisiana's Karasiewicz scored his second goal of the night. Ice Bears David Segal started his second fight of the night, setting the stage for the ultimate matchup. Goalie Chad Collins was pulled from the net and replaced by Andrew Gallant, who came off the bench smack-talking IceGators goalie Bucchino. It didn't take long for the goalies to meet center ice and air their differences. Both goalies were given game misconduct penalties and sent off the ice to a roaring crowd. Collins returned to the net for his first win as an Ice Bear as Knoxville was able to hold onto the lead with two more goals in the third. The win tonight brings Knoxville's record to 20-12-1 and their streak to five wins in a row.
