BILOXI, MS - Mike Richard and Matt Zultek each potted goals as the Mississippi Surge defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths 2-1 in front of 4,848 fans at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday night.
Matt Zultek potted his 21st power-play goal to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead, rifling a shot from the low slot past Columbus goaltender Ian Vigier at 6:05 of the first period with the Surge on a five-on-three.
Mike Richard broke a six-game scoreless drought when he fired a shot through a screen past Vigier at 9:06 of the third period to give the Surge a 2-0 lead. Columbus drew within one when Ryan McCarthy grabbed a turnover in the right circle and fired it past Surge goalie Bill Zaniboni at 13:58 of the third.
The Surge held fast through the third period, killing off a tripping minor to Steve Weidlich at the 15:15 mark, and the fate of the game was sealed when Columbus took three minor penalties in the final minute of play.
Bill Zaniboni made 19 saves to earn the win for the Surge, and Mississippi went 1-for-10 on the power play.
