Legends Caravan Set For February 2, 3, 4

The Lexington Legends' annual radio caravan will make stops in Cynthiana, Richmond, Somerset, Danville and Lexington Feb. 2, 3 and 4 as the team prepares for its 10th season. The Legends are members of the South Atlantic League and a class A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Legends representatives, including the familiar "Big L," and special baseball guests will be on hand to meet with local media and fans. Some Legends souvenir items will be available, and fans will have an opportunity to win ticket vouchers for the Legends' opening home game.

"We're officially off and running with our 10th year anniversary celebration," said Legends General Manager Andy Shea. "It will be great to visit the Central Kentucky communities and begin talking about Legends baseball."

The caravan is designed to show appreciation for radio affiliates, listeners and Legends fans throughout the region. The schedule:

Tuesday, Feb. 2:

Cynthiana: 8 a.m.- 9 a.m. live broadcast of "Coffee Break" on WCYN, 1400 AM, from Biancke's Restaurant, 102 South Main, Cynthiana. Longtime Harrison County High School baseball Coach Mac Whitaker will be a special guest.

Wednesday, Feb. 3:

Richmond: 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. Legends representatives will join EKU Coach Jason Stein and some Colonel players to celebrate the approach of another baseball season. In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors in the Powell Building.

Somerset: 4 p.m.- 5 p.m. at HoneyBaked Ham, 1813 South Highway 27, Somerset. Legends Hall of Famer Josh Anderson, now with the Cincinnati Reds, is scheduled to join the caravan for the Somerset stop. Anderson, a native of Eubank in Pulaski County and a former Eastern Kentucky University baseball star, played for the -more-

Legends in 2004. He played in only 73 games for Lexington before moving up to Class A (advanced) Salem, but still holds the Legends' record for season and career stolen bases with 48, and is still among the Legends' all-time leaders in several categories. Anderson broke in to the major leagues with the Astros in 2007. He spent most of the 2009 season with the Detroit Tigers before a late-season trade to Kansas City. For the season, he played in 118 games, and stole 25 bases in 30 attempts.

Thursday, Feb. 4:

Danville: Fazoli's 3 p.m.- 4 p.m. "Big L" and Legends staffers will be at Fazoli's with Legends giveaway items and opening day ticket vouchers.

Lexington: 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Calistoga Café, 2217 War Admiral Way, near the intersection of Winchester Road and Sir Barton Way.

Scheduled guests at the Lexington stop include:

Jeff Parrett, a star pitcher at Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky who went on to a 10-year career in the major leagues, highlighted by a 12-4 mark with Montreal in 1988 and a 9-1 record with Oakland in 1992. John Shelby Jr., a former Henry Clay High School star who played for 11 seasons in the major leagues and was a member of two World Series champions, the 1983 Baltimore Orioles and the 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers; Keith Madison, head baseball coach at the University of Kentucky for 25 years and a member of the Kentucky High School Baseball Hall of Fame, University of Kentucky Hall of Fame, and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame; Michael Bertram, another former UK standout and Lafayette alum who finished the 2009 season by hitting.285 in 136 at-bats with double-A Erie in the Detroit Tigers organization. Bertram and Shelby were teammates on UK's 2006 Southeastern Conference champions; Ben Revere, former Lexington Catholic star who signed with the Minnesota Twins and is called "the best pure hitter in the organization and one of the best in the minors" by Baseball America; selected Twins' minor league Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. Robbie Ross, a left-handed pitcher from Lexington Christian who is now in the Texas Rangers organization after being chosen in the second round of the 2008 draft. John Shelby III, former Tates Creek and UK star now a highly regarded prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization; Chaz Roe, a Lafayette graduate and one of the top pitching prospects in the Colorado Rockies organization. Kevin Clary, head baseball coach at Lexington Catholic High School; Kentucky's coach of the year for 2009.
