Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - As the 2010 season approaches, the Florence Freedom are pleased to announce another standout from the 2009 summer will get his chance in affiliated baseball.
Preston Vancil, 23, has been signed by the Seattle Mariners and has been invited to their minor league spring training.
The right-handed pitcher Sacramento, California native went 6-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 66.1 innings after joining the Freedom on July 17 of last season. In 11 starts, he allowed 42 hits, struck out 61 batters and gave up 44 walks, holding his opponents to a.182 batting average.
"We're really happy for Preston and the opportunity the Mariners are giving him," Freedom Manager Toby Rumfield said. "He's a hard worker; he's earned the opportunity to chase him dreams with a great rookie season last summer and we wish him the best of luck."
Vancil's most memorable start came on July 26 when he threw the first ever Freedom no-hitter against the Traverse City Beach Bums, and only the fourteenth no-hitter in Frontier League history by a single pitcher.
The 2009 season was Vancil's first professional season after going 5-6 with a 3.54 ERA in 16 starts with Abilene Christian University in the spring. In 2009 with the Wildcats, he threw 4 complete games, including a shutout against West Texas A&M on March 7.
The Freedom are members of the Independent Frontier League and open their home season on May 25 against the Southern Illinois Miners. Season and group tickets are currently on sale. Contact the Freedom at (859) 594-HITS or visit FlorenceFreedom.com for 2010 ticket and promotional information.
