NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Travelers and UALR Trojans radio broadcaster Phil Elson has been named the 2009 Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year on Thursday by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Elson has called almost 1300 games since joining the Travs in 2001 as the franchise's first full-time radio broadcaster. He has also served as the broadcaster for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans women's basketball team since 2005.
This is Elson's first time winning the annual award, which is voted on by members of the NSSA who work in Arkansas.
"I am honored and humbled to win this award particularly because it is voted on by my peers," said Elson. "I also would like to thank the Travelers and UALR Trojans for giving me the opportunity to call games for first-class organizations and fans."
Elson, 33, has also broadcast baseball for the Helena (MT) Brewers, Ogden (UT) Raptors and Mudville Nine (in Stockton, California) during a 15-year career.
The NSSA will hold its annual banquet in Salisbury, North Carolina on May 3 where state-by-state and national winners will receive their awards.
