Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Pensacola Ice Flyers have signed Matt Whitehead. The 5-7, 160 pound Whitehead won an NCAA championship with SUNY-Oswego and started this season with an ECHL team. He brings a fast-paced, high-energy game to the Ice Flyers.
Matt Whitehead comes to Pensacola from the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL. Whitehead skated with the Wranglers in training camp this season and scored a goal in his one preseason game. The previous four seasons Whitehead played collegiate hockey with SUNY-Oswego.
From 2005-2009 Whitehead scored 33 goals and 30 assists for SUNY-Oswego. Whitehead helped the 2006-2007 Lakers win the NCAA D-III championship and reach the conference finals the next two seasons.
Ice Flyers coach Todd Gordon is expecting great things from the forward: "Matt Whitehead is going to be an instant fan-favorite. He's a smaller guy but he'll be the fastest player on our team. His style is very high-energy; he goes to the net hard and creates a lot of traffic. He should be a great penalty killer for us, as well as on the power play. We look forward to great things from him."
Along with the addition of Whitehead, the Ice Flyers released defenseman Rich Zalewski. Whitehead joins the Ice Flyers as they prepare to host the Mississippi Surge tonight at 7:05 p.m. Before the game, the Ice Flyers are holding a food drive to benefit Manna Food Pantries. All donators will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win an Ice Flyers prize pack. Please visit www.pensacolaiceflyers.com for more information.
