Admirals Look To Climb Standings This Week At Scope

NORFOLK, Va. - After splitting a pair of games against the Manitoba Moose last weekend, the Admirals have set their sights on the two teams immediately in front of them in the East Division standings with battles at Scope against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday and Binghamton Senators on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Admirals fell to the Manitoba Moose 4-1 at Scope. However, Brandon Bochenski and Mark Parrish each had three-point nights to help the Admirals erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat Manitoba 5-4 in the Saturday rematch. The Admirals finished the first ever season series against the defending Western Conference Champion Moose with a 3-1-0-0 record.

The Admirals host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins) on Wednesday night at Scope. They will then battle the Binghamton Senators (AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators) on Friday and Saturday nights. The Admirals have a bevy of promotions set for their three games this week. EAST DIVISION STANDINGS

At 13-15-1-0 (27 points), the Admirals are in fifth place in the American Hockey League's East Division. The East is led by the Hershey Bears (18-8-0-2, 38 pts). They are followed by the Albany River Rats (17-10-1-2, 37 pts), Binghamton Senators (13-10-3-1, 30 pts), and Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins (13-12-1-1, 28 pts). The Adirondack Phantoms (12-12-2-0, 26 pts) and the Syracuse Crunch (10-14-2-2, 24 pts) round out the division.

ADMIRALS' LOG

- The Admirals established new season highs on Saturday vs. Manitoba for shots in a game with 49 and shots in a single period with 21 in the second stanza.

- Seventeen of Norfolk's 18 skaters recorded at least one shot on goal on Saturday night vs. Manitoba.

- Norfolk netted multiple power play goals for the first time this season by going 2-4 on the man advantage on Saturday. Both power play markers came on four-on-three power plays and were by Brandon Bochenski.

- Bochenski now stands only two goals away from tying Casey Hankinson's AHL Admirals for goals in a career. Hankinson recorded 76 goals in 219 career games with the Admirals from 2000-01 to 2002-03. Bochenski has 74 goals in 133 career games with the Admirals from 2006-07 to the present. Bochenski (Blaine, MN) and Hankinson (Edina, MN) grew up just 15 minutes apart from one another.

- Bochenski extended his AHL Admirals records with his 31st and 32nd career power play goals and his 15th career game-winning goal in Saturday's win.

- Bochenski, Adam Hall and Vladimir Mihalik are the only Norfolk players to have appeared in all 29 games this season.

- Bochenski (2G, 4A) and Mark Parrish (3G, 3A) both have points in three straight games.

- Ryan Craig has points in five of his last six games (2G, 5A).

- Radek Smolenak's point streak ended at five games (2G, 5A) on Saturday vs. Manitoba.

- Riku Helenius snapped a personal four-game losing streak on Saturday vs. Manitoba.

ADMIRALS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Brandon Bochenski: 2GP, 2G, 2A, 4PTS

Brandon Bochenski led Norfolk with four points as the Admirals split a pair of home games against the Manitoba Moose last week. On Friday, Bochenski assisted on Norfolk's lone goal in a 4-1 setback to the Moose. On Saturday, Bochenski netted two power play goals - including the third-period game-winner - and assisted on another goal as the Admirals erased a two-goal deficit to beat the Moose 5-4.

Bochenski has 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 29 games for Norfolk this season. He leads the team in goals and points and is tied for the team lead in assists. His five power play goals and four game-winning goals are also tops on the team. He also ranks second in the AHL in goals, eighth in points, tied for eighth in power play goals and tied for second in game-winning goals. Bochenski has 74 goals as an Admiral and is only two goals shy of tying Casey Hankinson's club record of 76 goals in an AHL Admirals career. Bochenski already owns the AHL Admirals records with 32 career power play goals and 15 career game-winning goals. He currently has points in three straight games (2G, 4A).

CHANUKAH AT SCOPE

Wednesday night is Chanukah at Scope, presented by the Chabad of Tidewater. Special discounted tickets are available through the Chabad of Tidewater until Tuesday night. Student Rush Nights, brought to you by Pit Bull Energy Drink and Baxter's Sports Lounge, include all Tuesday and Wednesday night home games. All students have to do is show their valid, current student ID at the Scope Box Office after 2:00 p.m. on the day of the game and receive a White Level ticket for just $8 (normally $12). Plus, students will receive a buy one, get one free offer for the next Student Rush night. High School and College IDs are accepted. This offer is not available anywhere other than the Scope Box Office.

Student Rush tickets will also get students $5.99 menu items at Baxter's Sports Lounge before and after the game that day. Baxter's Sports Lounge is located just behind Norfolk Scope at 500 Granby Street. Students of any age with Student Rush tickets will be permitted into Baxter's prior to game time. After the game, only students over age 21 with Student Rush ticket stubs will be permitted unless a parent or guardian accompanies them.

SCOUT NIGHT

Friday night is Scout Night through the Tidewater Boy Scout Council. Special discounted tickets are available at the Boy Scout Council Service Center. Tickets must be purchased by Tuesday (December 15) at 7:00 p.m. All units purchasing tickets will be recognized on the Scope scoreboards.

TRADING CARD GIVEAWAY

On Saturday, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive the first set of 2009-10 Admirals trading cards, courtesy of John's Tax Service and The Virginian-Pilot. Look for randomly inserted limited edition gold parallel cards. There is one gold card in every 10 packs.

TOY TOSS

The Admirals' annual Toy Toss will take place Saturday night. Admirals fans are asked to bring new stuffed toys to that game to throw onto the ice after the Admirals score their first goal. The Toy Toss is an official Marine Corps Toys For Tots event and a Norfolk Holidays In The City Event.

HOLIDAY ORNAMENT AUCTION

Also on Saturday, the Norfolk Admirals' wives and girlfriends will hold a holiday ornament auction to benefit The Joy Fund during the game. Custom-designed ornaments will be up for silent auction that night near Gate 14 on the Scope concourse. The ornaments were designed by the Admirals wives and girlfriends and are personalized to reflect the interests and personalities of Admirals and Lightning players. The Admirals will hold the silent auction through the second intermission. All proceeds will go to the Joy Fund.

POST-GAME SKATE

Fans can cap off the weekend on Saturday with the Admirals with the second post-game skate of the season. Fans can skate at Scope with their favorite Admirals following the game. A limited number of skates will be available or fans may bring their own skates.

SCOUTING REPORT

Several former Admirals will return to Scope this week as the Admirals square off against a pair of East Division rivals.

The Admirals will host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday night for the first of five games between the clubs at Scope this season. Both teams have one win in the season series so far. Dustin Jeffrey (5G, 21A, 26PTS) leads the Baby Pens in assists and points. Former Admiral Wyatt Smith ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 16 points (4+12). Former Admirals defenseman Ben Lovejoy has split the season between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Pittsburgh and has three goals and seven points in 15 games for the AHL Penguins. Former Admirals forward Wade Brookbank is among the team leaders in penalty minutes (54). In their last game, the Penguins fell to the Adirondack Phantoms in New York on Sunday 3-2. They do not play again until meeting Norfolk on Wednesday.

The Binghamton Senators will invade Scope on Friday and Saturday for the final two games between the teams in Hampton Roads this regular season. Both teams have a 5-3 victory to their credit in the season series after a split of the first two games at Scope on November 10-11. Former Admiral Martin St. Pierre leads Binghamton in assists (19) and points (31). Former Admirals defenseman Geoff Kinrade has a goal, nine points and a +12 rating for the B-Sens this season. Former Admirals goaltender Mike Brodeur (5-4-1, 2.92, .898) is currently on recall to the Ottawa Senators. The Senators defeated the Syracuse Crunch 6-3 in Binghamton on Saturday in their last game. They do not play again until meeting the Admirals at Scope on Friday.
