Toros and 66ers Split Series

AUSTIN, Texas Dec.2 - The Austin Toros and Tulsa 66ers split their two-game series tonight at the Austin Convention Center, with the 66ers defeating the Toros 92-90.

Mustafa Shakur hit a long jumper with one second left in the game to secure the victory for the 66ers.

The game was close the entire first half. After the 66ers led 25-22 at the end of the first quarter, the Toros fought back in the second quarter, scoring the final five points of the half, to take a 51-50 halftime lead.

There were seven ties and five lead changes in the first half alone, and both teams were within six points of each other the entire half. The 66ers turned the ball over nine times in the half and the Toros capitalized on them, scoring 18 points off of turnovers. Lewis Clinch led all players in scoring with 14 points at the half.

In the third quarter, the Toros began to pull away with an 8-0 run in the middle of the quarter, leading by 11 points at the time. However, the 66ers were able to get back within two points, trailing 71-69 to the Toros at the end of the third quarter. Shakur led the 66ers with 11 points in the quarter.

The fourth quarter was back and forth from the very beginning. The 66ers were able to tie the game on a short jumper by Cecil Brown with six minutes left to play, and the two teams battled it out over the final few minutes, ending with Shakur's game-winning shot.

The 66ers were led by Shakur with 26 points and Brown with 19. Byron Mullens had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds on the night.

Dwayne Jones and Curtis Jerrells both had double-doubles for the Toros, scoring 20 and 17 points, respectively, and both grabbing 11 rebounds. Lewis Clinch added 19 points and three rebounds for the Toros.

The Toros (2-2) will head to Albuquerque on Friday for a two- game series against the Thunderbirds. The Toros will host The Schoolhouse Jams against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers December 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the Austin Convention Center.
