Oil Kings Drop A 3-2 (OT) Decision To Moose Jaw

November 28, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Edmonton Oil Kings

Edmonton, AB - It looked like Parent Weekend was going to be all that the Edmonton Oil Kings dreamed of. The Oil Kings came out skating hard against the Moose Jaw Warriors and, at the midpoint of the first period, they scored two goals within about a half minute. Edmonton held that lead until the wheels came off in with about seven minutes to go in the contest. The Warriors got three goals, from three different players, and went on to a 3-2 overtime win. A point was all the Oil Kings could show their parents after playing 40 solid minutes.

"Our older guys have to be able to control those situations and I think it's about time we challenged them," said Edmonton Head Coach Steve Pleau. "Breitkreuz wasn't good enough tonight, Van de Mosselaer wasn't good enough tonight, and if we're going to have any chance at making a run at this thing, the 19's and 20's have to step and man up."

Oil Kings forward Michael Burns opened the scoring when he stripped a Moose Jaw defenseman of the puck right by the net and stuffed in his fifth goal of the year. Burns has goals in two straight games. Fresh off two games in the SUBWAY Super Series, and just 29 seconds later, Brent Raedeke scored his 14th goal of the season. A TJ Foster shot rattled off a screen in front of Warriors goalie Brandon Glover and Raedeke popped it in the open net to make it 2-0.

It stayed that way until 13 minutes into the third when Spencer Edwards tipped a Kendall McFaull point shot past Edmonton goalie Torrie Jung. About a minute and a half later, the Warriors Quinton Howden walked in on the left wing boards and snapped one past Jung from a bad angle to tie it 2-2.

Moose Jaw carried momentum into overtime and Dylan Hood tipped a point shot passed Jung and stunned the Oil Kings. The point helps keep the 11th place Oil Kings (8-13-4-4) close to the pack but they trail eighth place Moose Jaw by six points.

The Oil Kings head out on a lengthy six game road trip on Tuesday. Edmonton will play four games in BC where they will take on the Kamloops Blazers, Kelowna Rockets, Vancouver Giants and Kootenay Ice. Then, they will travel to Saskatchewan for a game against the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Oil Kings road trip will wrap up in Manitoba with a contest against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
