Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release

MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA Development League Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that their parent club, the NBA Houston Rockets, are assigning forward/center Joey Dorsey to the Vipers.

This will be Dorsey's second assignment to the Vipers, following a seven-game stint last season from December 26-through-January 9, during which time he averaged 9.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while starting five times. Dorsey (6-8, 268), who was a teammate of Vipers first round pick Antoine Anderson for three years at Memphis, has yet to see game action with the Rockets this season. Dorsey scored two points while recording one rebound and one assist in six minutes over the course of three games for the Rockets last season.

"Joey had a strong offseason and a solid training camp for us, but in continuing to focus on his development, we believe that at this point of the season the Rio Grande Valley Vipers offer him the best option for his basketball progression. In determining Joey's assignment, we were also encouraged by the fact that because of our single- affiliation partnership with the Vipers, we can offer him a valued opportunity to develop on a more active basis in terms of his ability to play. We know that Joey will be in good hands with Head Coach Chris Finch and his staff, as well as having all the resources necessary for him to be productive during his time in the D-League. This is one of the primary reasons for our single-affiliation partnership and we look forward to reaping the benefits of it through these development opportunities," Rockets Vice President of Player Personnel/General Manager of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers Gersson Rosas said.

Dorsey played for the Rockets during the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA Sports in Las Vegas, helping to lead the team to a 5-0 record by averaging 9.8 points and a league-best 14.8 rebounds per game. He also blocked 13 shots, 65% of the team's total, good for an average of 2.6 per game, third best in the league.

Dorsey becomes the second NBA-assignee to spend training camp with the Vipers, after Rockets-assignee Steve Novak did the same in 2007. The Vipers open training camp tomorrow.

There are currently five Vipers alumni playing in the NBA: Aaron Brooks (Rockets), C.J. Watson (Golden State Warriors), Jawad Williams (Cleveland Cavaliers), Shannon Brown (Los Angeles Lakers), and Novak (Los Angeles Clippers). Brooks, Brown and Novak were all NBA-assignees while Watson and Williams received GATORADE call-ups.
