Derek MacKenzie Named 11th Captain in Syracuse Crunch History

Syracuse, NY (October 3, 2009) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they have named Derek MacKenzie as their team captain for the 2009-10 season. In addition, the club also announced that center Trevor Frischmon and left wing Alexandre Picard have been named alternate captains.

MacKenzie, 28, becomes the eleventh full-time captain in franchise history (Dane Jackson, 1994-95, Mark Wotton, 1995-99, Brian Bonin, 1999-00, Mike Gaul, 2000-01, Sean Pronger, 2001-02, David Ling 2002-03, Darrell Scoville, 2003-04, Jamie Pushor, 2004-07, Zenon Konopka 2007-08 and Dan Smith 2008-09).

MacKenzie has served as an alternate captain for each of the last two seasons. Overall, he has appeared in 126 games with the Crunch, collecting 47 goals, 54 assists and 96 penalty minutes. MacKenzie also led the club in playoff scoring during the Crunch's 2007-08 playoff run, tallying 14 points (6g, 8a) in 13 games.

In all, MacKenzie has skated in 503 combined AHL games with Chicago and the Crunch, collecting 130 goals, 153 assists and 533 penalty minutes. In addition, he has appeared in 46 combined National Hockey League games with Atlanta and Columbus, tallying two goals, two assists and 30 penalty minutes. A native of Sudbury, Ontario, MacKenzie was signed by Columbus as a free agent on July 11, 2007 and again on July 14, 2008

The Crunch open their 16th AHL season on Saturday, October 3 in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Syracuse opens up at home the following weekend when they face Adirondack on Saturday, October 10.
