MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA D-League Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that they will launch the 2009-10 Read to Achieve Program on Friday from 4-to-6:00 p.m. at Boggus Ford in Harlingen (2521 S. Expressway 83).

The Vipers will supply all children ages five-through-12 in attendance with books to read during the two-hour period. The first 12 children to complete all three books will receive two tickets to the October 7 Houston Rockets-Boston Celtics pre-season NBA game at Dodge Arena. Any child who completes one book will receive a certificate for free tickets to the Vipers home opener against the Tulsa 66ers on December 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Dodge Arena.

"The most important skill that children learn while growing up is how to read, and we want to encourage children to read as much as possible. Read to Achieve was a huge success last year and with the help of Boggus Ford, we know it will be an even bigger success this year," Vipers President/GM Brian Michael Cooper said.

The Read to Achieve program is part of the NBA Cares program and has been very successful with schools and libraries. The program is used for supporting, pushing and recognizing the students who are learning to read. The basis of the program is encouraging the students who are learning to read. The librarian and principal choose a reading goal for each grade level. Whoever meets this goal will receive one free ticket to a Vipers game. Upon receiving a free ticket, we invite their families out to the game as well at the discounted ticket price of $10.

Each school comes to a pre-determined game, allowing the students and participating families to sit in a section of the arena designated for them. During the game the Vipers recognize the school/students for their hard work and try to involve them in some sort of on-court activity.

Those interested in getting involved should contact Vipers Director of Community Relations Liana Cisneros.
