Huntsville Havoc News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL - Huntsville Havoc Head Coach Randy Murphy announced today that Travis Kauffeldt will return to Huntsville this season and the team has signed former Knoxville forward Mike Carter.
Kauffeldt had originally signed with the Missouri Mavericks of the CHL, but has decided to return to the Havoc this season. The Bancroft, Ontario native scored 37 goals and recorded 33 assists last season on his way to being named the SPHL MVP. He has played in 155 career games and scored 71 goals and recorded 98 assists.
"Anytime you can have the addition of someone like Travis it raises the bar in terms of your offensive group," Murphy said. "Above and beyond being named MVP of the SPHL, it is what drives Travis that was most attractive to me. He wants to win and contribute by being a leader, good teammate and good person day in and day out, which is the number I look for when recruiting. We look for Travis to continue to challenge himself to get better every day."
Kauffeldt broke the Havoc team record last season with 37 goals scored. He currently ranks sixth all-time in Havoc history in games played (153), second in goals scored (71), second in assists (98) and fourth in penalty minutes (382). He also set the Havoc record for best +/- in a season last year with a +17. He was recently engaged to Olivia Buccella, sister of former Havoc teammate Dan Buccella.
"Huntsville is my second home and where I want to play," Kauffeldt said. "The organization and the great fans of Huntsville deserve a championship and I want to be there to be a part of it. I'm looking forward to playing with the guys that are returning and talented new guys who Coach Murphy has added."
Carter (5-8, 180) was a key member of the Knoxville Ice Bears' 2007-08 and 2008-08 SPHL Championships. He played in 110 games over those two seasons, scoring 32 goals and recording 93 assists. He has played in 265 career games and scored 71 goals and recorded 135 assists.
"Mike is a very dynamic player with tremendous speed," Murphy said. "We will look for Mike to add veteran leadership through relentless work ethic and knowing what it takes to win. He is very eager to get started and the fans should have some familiarity with him from the past two seasons."
The Cambridge, Ontario native spent the 2004-07 seasons in the CHL with the Wichita Thunder, Odessa Jackalopes and the Lubbock Cotton Kings. He played college hockey at Mercyhurst College from 2000-04. Carter scored 42 goals and recorded 55 assists in 131 games played.
"I got caught in a numbers game in Knoxville and I was the odd man out," Carter said. "I know what type of team Huntsville has year-in and year-out. I know they are a first-class organization and they have tremendous fans. I feel very fortunate to continue my career here and I want to do whatever I can to help win a championship."
