Springfield Cardinals News Release
The 2009 Texas League Championship Series begins in Midland tonight, as the South Division Champion Midland RockHounds host the North Division Champion Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
This is Midland's second trip to the Championship Series in the last five seasons, with the RockHounds taking the crown back in 2005. For Northwest Arkansas, they reach the final round for the first time in their franchise's brief two-year history.
Pitching for Midland tonight is right-hander Arnold Leon, as he takes on Naturals' right-hander Anthony Lerew at 6:30pm.
Games one and two will be in Midland, with the series shifting to Springdale, Arkansas for game three on Friday, with four and five if necessary.
MEMPHIS TO BATTLE SACRAMENTO FOR PCL TITLE
The Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, who currently feature 21 former Springfield Cardinals on their roster, open the Pacific Coast League Championship Series tonight, as they host the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A's, the Sacramento River Cats.
While the Memphis roster is made up primarily of former Springfield players, Sacramento has one as well. Third baseman Brett Wallace, the key piece of the trade that sent Matt Holliday to St. Louis, returns to Memphis for the second time since the trade. Wallace, who opened the 2009 season in Springfield, but was promoted to Memphis in May, hit .302 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 44 games in a Sacramento uniform.
The Redbirds, making their first appearance in the playoffs since winning the PCL title in 2000, will send left-hander Jaime Garcia to the mound in game one. Sacramento, bidding for what would be a PCL record, third straight title, will go with right-hander Chris Gissell.
