Bumgarner Shuts Down Rock Cats 3-0

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders once again continued their winning ways against inter-state rival New Britain Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium as Connecticut coasted to a 3-0 shutout victory. The win guaranteed the Defenders a winning series.

The Defenders jumped on the Rock Cats in the first with an RBI ground out by LF-Brad Boyer that scored Brock Bond who scored reaching on a leadoff walk and Connecticut was out in front 1-0 and essentially that's all they needed.

Connecticut scored a second run in the first inning when a pitch from RHP-Matt Fox got away from his battery mate C-Dan Lehman allowing CF-Mike McBryde to cross the plate.

The Defenders added an insurance run in the sixth inning after McBryde kicked things off with a double, his second of the ballgame. Brad Boyer collected his second hit of the contest setting runners up on the corners for the Eastern League's RBI leader. 1B-Brett Pill ripped a single back up the middle driving in the third run of the game and his 96th of the season giving Connecticut a 3-0 lead.

LHP-Madison Bumgarner (9-1) was fantastic picking up his ninth win of the season throwing seven scoreless innings giving up just four hits, walking just one and striking out a pair. Rock Cat's starter suffered the loss despite the good start going eight innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Connecticut's Shane Kaufman picked up his second save working a perfect ninth.

The Defenders (76-53) and the Rock Cats (66-63) will finish up the their three game set and season series tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium at 6:35pm. On the hill for Connecticut will be RHP-Garrett Broshuis (3-4). New Britain will counter with RHP-Mike McCardell (3-1) in the final regular season meeting between these two teams.

Thursdays are "Thirsty Thursdays," at the ballpark with the first 500 fans 21+ receiving FREE Sam Adams pint glasses as well as $3 Sam Adams all night.
