Ryan Lavarnway's Solo Homer Accounts for Greenville's Only Run

Greenville Drive News Release

Charleston, WV - All of the five runs on Sunday at Appalachian Power Park came by way of the long ball. Unfortunately for the Drive (66-57, 27-28), Ryan Lavarnway's solo shot - his 17th of the season - was their only run.

Meanwhile, Tony Sanchez and Calvin Anderson each homered for the Power (57-65, 30-22), giving them a 4-1 win in early-evening contest.

Neither team showed much offense through the first three innings, as Zach Gentile's leadoff single in the top of the first and Oscar Tejeda's single in the third were the only hits until Lavarnway's fourth inning blast.

In fact, Drive starting pitcher Caleb Clay (4-6) was perfect over that span as he recorded four strikeouts. But Starling Marte's double to begin the home half of the fourth, sent Clay into a downward spiral as he would allow three runs.

Robbie Grossman followed Marte with a bunt single before Sanchez sent an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield wall, giving West Virginia a lead that they would not relinquish. Anderson added his solo shot in the bottom of the sixth off reliever Mike Lee.

For the Power, Aaron Prilbanic (2-1) lasted 6.0 strong innings, allowing Lavarnway's homer before Duke Welker and Casey Erickson finished off the game. Despite allowing three hits and issuing two walks, Welker did not surrender a run in 2.0 innings. Erickson earned his 4th save by tossing a perfect ninth.

The Drive and Power conclude their four-game series on Monday with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (1-0, 2.75 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, as West Virginia counters with right-hander Brett Lorin (0-1, 2.45 ERA).

Greenville returns home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, August 25th for a four-game set against the Northern Division-leading Kannapolis Intimidators, affiliates of the Chicago White Sox.
