State College Spikes News Release
BURLINGTON, VT-Edward Garcia became the second State College Spikes player to collect four hits in one game and was one of three Spikes with three or more hits as State College pounded the Vermont Lake Monsters, 10-5, at Centennial Field on Sunday evening.
Garcia joined Carlos Silva as the only players with four-hit games for State College (29-28), and knocked in two runs to help the Spikes' offensive cause. Silva collected his four-hit game against Auburn on July 27. Justin Byler and David Rubinstein had three hits apiece for State College, as the Spikes collected 14 hits as a team. Rubinstein added two RBI in the game.
Evan Chambers also aided State College with his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left field in the eighth inning to help the Spikes notch their first-ever win at Centennial Field.
Tyler Cox (7-2) jumped into a tie for the New York-Penn League lead in wins with his seventh victory of the season, pitching four innings in relief of Spikes starter Victor Black, and allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out one. Black struck out four batters and did not allow a hit over his three innings of work.
Vermont (26-30) starter Chad Jenkins (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks over two innings of work.
The Lake Monsters got as close as 6-5 after a four-run fifth inning, but came no closer in the game.
Spikes All-Star infielder Brock Holt left the game in the fifth inning, and was replaced by Ty Summerlin.
The Spikes and Lake Monsters will next be in action at the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m., and gates opening at 3 p.m. to allow fans to see batting practice and get autographs from all of the All-Stars.
