August 15, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Quality starting pitching, a reliable bullpen and another big night from Donell Linares lifted Myrtle Beach to a 4-2 victory over Lynchburg at City Stadium Saturday night. The Hillcats will try to salvage a win in the finale of the three-game series on Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
The Pelicans jumped out to the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Michael Fisher hit a one-out single and Linares belted a two-run home run off Cats starter Matt McSwain over the left field fence to give Myrtle Beach a 2-0 advantage. The home run was Linares' sixth hit in six at-bats in the series. He went 2-for-3 in the game and is now 7-for-8 in the series with a home run, two doubles and 7 RBI.
Lynchburg (19-29, 64-53) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. Chase d'Arnaud hit a one-out single off Pelicans starter Cole Rohrbough. After Rohrbough retired Josh Harrison, d'Arnaud stole second and scored on Jordy Mercer's fly ball that glanced off the glove of Myrtle Beach shortstop Robert Marcial and was ruled an error.
The Cats evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Jared Keel belted his 11th home run of the season off Rohrbough.
Myrtle Beach (21-27, 46-69) reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Fisher doubled to start the inning and McSwain issued consecutive walks to Linares and Cody Johnson to load the bases. McSwain induced Jesus Sucre to hit into a 6-4-3 double play that plated Fisher from third. Chris Shehan followed with an RBI double into center field that enabled Linares to score from third and make it a 4-2 ballgame.
The Pelicans' pitching staff took over in the late innings. Myrtle Beach reliever Patrick Currin allowed four hits in 1 1/3 innings, but did not yield any runs. Pelicans closer Cory Gearrin worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the Myrtle Beach victory.
Rohrbough (5-7) allowed five hits, two runs and one earned run in six innings of work to pick up the win. He is now 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA in three starts against Lynchburg this season. McSwain (9-8) gave up seven hits and four earned runs and was charged with the loss for Lynchburg. Gearrin earned his 14th save in 14 opportunities.
The Hillcats will look to salvage a win and avoid the series sweep when the two teams meet at City Stadium Sunday night. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. Lynchburg will send LHP Justin Wilson (5-7, 4.83 ERA) to the mound. Myrtle Beach is expected to start RHP Erik Cordier (6-5, 3.48 ERA).
