-SPIKES WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE: After taking two of three from the Oneonta Tigers, the Spikes hit the road for a three-game series at Centennial Field against the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Spikes' final series before the All-Star break will also be their final series against the Stedler Division. In the all-time series between State College and Vermont, the two teams are tied, 4-4, with Vermont taking both completed games at Centennial Field.
-LAST GAME: A crowd of 5,504, the seventh-largest in ballpark history, watched the Spikes split a doubleheader with the Oneonta Tigers last night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, dropping game one, 10-1, before taking game two by a 10-2 score. The Spikes also welcomed in the largest walk-up crowd in the four years of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as 1,357 fans purchased their tickets on game day, besting the record set on Opening Day 2009. Pat Irvine went 4-for-5 with four RBI across the doubleheader.
-MAC BACK ON THE MOUND FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Kyle McPherson gets the ball for State College on Friday and makes his team-leading 10th start of the season. McPherson has six quality starts (six innings or more, three or less runs) in his last seven. Last time out, McPherson took a loss after allowing three runs over six innings to Hudson Valley.
-MONSTERS TO START SWYNENBERG: Right-hander Matt Swynenberg goes to the hill for Vermont in the first game of the series. Swynenberg has made four starts on the year, with a long of 4 2/3 innings. This will be his fourth start of the year at home as well.
-TRIO OF SPIKES NAMED ALL-STARS: Brock Holt, Phillip Irwin and Zach Foster each earned NL All-Star mention as the rosters for the 2009 NYPL All-Star Game were announced. The game will take place this coming Tuesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Holt currently leads all NL All-Stars in home runs with six, Irwin has allowed just one earned run in 22 innings, and Foster has an ERA of 1.10 in 13 apperances out of the bullpen.
