Last Game
Columbus Crew 3, Earthquakes 0; August 8, 2009; Candlestick Park; San Francisco, Calif.
The Columbus Crew walked away with a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, courtesy of second-half goals from Alejandro Moreno, Robbie Rogers and Adam Moffat. The Quakes settled quickly, with Ryan Johnson springing Darren Huckerby on a breakaway in the third minute, but Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer was off his line to spoil the Englishman's effort. Columbus responded with two chances in a four minute span. A short chip from Rogers nearly put Steven Lenhart through, but Quakes defender Brandon McDonald was able to muscle the Crew forward off the ball. In the eighth minute, a free kick from Chad Marshall was then saved comfortably by San Jose 'keeper Joe Cannon. While neither team could gain a stranglehold on possession, San Jose began carving out the better chances. In the 30th minute Cornell Glen evaded the attentions of Marshall with a quick turn, but his blast was turned superbly around the far post by Hesmer. Marshall was much sharper four minutes later, breaking up a quick combination between Huckerby and Glen that nearly threatened the Crew goal. In a bid to generate more offense, Warzycha brought on Emmanuel Ekpo and Moreno for Gaven and Garey, respectively, and it took less than 10 minutes for both players to help put the Crew ahead. Ekpo's cross from the right wing was headed back across goal by Rogers to Moreno, who nodded home his fourth goal of the season from close range. Earlier the Quakes had brought on Arturo Alvarez for the tiring Johnson, but Rogers doubled the Crew's advantage just four minutes after Moreno's tally. Rogers received the ball near the left hand corner of the box, and a hard tackle by Leitch looked to have killed the threat. But the ball fell fortuitously right back to the Crew midfielder, and he made no mistake with an authoritative finish into the upper corner. The double blow seemed to take the life out of the Quakes, and Moffat then capped off the night in the 87th minute, heading home Gino Padula's corner kick with the help of a deflection by the Quakes' McDonald.

Hernandez Visits Bay Area Scores Program
Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez visited America Scores Bay Area Wednesday, August 5 as part of the Amway Global Kicks for Kids Program. Hernandez was first introduced by America Scores San Francisco Soccer Director, Yuri Morales, and was welcomed by the children with overwhelming cheers and applause. The New York native stressed the impact a healthy diet and active lifestyle had on his life growing up playing multiple sports. Hernandez, a former baseball player, explained to the children how the choices he made as a child to eat healthy foods helped him achieve his goal of becoming a professional soccer player. He spoke about how small choices like choosing wheat bread over white bread can go a long way and emphasized drinking water over soda especially in the warm California weather. After Hernandez finished speaking, he opened the floor to a question and answer session. The crowd consisted of enthusiastic soccer fans, many donning Earthquakes, Barcelona and Chivas jerseys in spirit with the Night of Champions doubleheader they were receiving tickets to and asked Hernandez many questions about the Earthquakes and the current season. To conclude the afternoon, the 5'11" defender signed player cards and Earthquakes staff handed out over 150 jersey replica shirts and 150 tickets, donated by Amway Global, to the students to attend the Earthquakes home game on August 8 against the Columbus Crew and the second game between FC Barcelona and CD Guadalajara at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
Three Quakes to Play in Qualifier Wednesday
Three members of the San Jose Earthquakes were called up by their respective national teams for the Wednesday, August 12 World Cup qualifying match between El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago. The match kicks off at 4:30 p.m. PT at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Cornell Glen has been named to the roster for Trinidad and Tobago for the match, while Ramon Sanchez and Arturo Alvarez will suit up for El Salvador. All three players departed the Bay Area on Sunday and will be back before the Quakes next Major League Soccer match on August 22 against the Kansas City Wizards. Sanchez, who is currently the captain of El Salvador, has made more than 50 appearances for El Salvador's senior national squad, scoring two goals. The San Juan Opico native has appeared in every World Cup qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Alvarez will be looking to make his debut for El Salvador after playing for the United States at the youth national team level. Glen most recently played for Trinidad and Tobago on June 6 in a 3-2 qualifying loss to Costa Rica. For his career, he has appeared in 56 games and scored 22 goals for his country.
