Portland Beavers News Release
RENO, Nev. - Ruben Gotay went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a homer and Rusty Ryal and Brandon Allen also homered as the Reno Aces jumped all over the Portland Beavers 11-5 at Aces Ballpark Tuesday night.
Gotay drove in three runs while Allen and Brandon Watson contributed two RBIs apiece for the Aces (49-48). John Hester added three hits, including a triple.
Danny Putnam's three-run triple in the eighth seemed to give the Beavers (44-53) some momentum but the Aces offense bailed out reliever Tom Gordon with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning.
Billy Buckner (5-2) struck out seven Beavers in 6 2/3 innings, holding the visitors to two runs on three hits and four free passes.
Beavers starter Brian Lawrence (2-4) was touched up for seven runs on 10 hits and six walks as he suffered his second loss of the season.
After giving up Ryal's solo homer in the first, Lawrence allowed the first four runners of the second inning to reach base as Hester tripled, Watson hit an RBI single, Cole Gillespie walked and Gotay hit an RBI single. Buckner drove in the third run of the inning with an RBI sacrifice bunt.
Lawrence again ran into trouble in the fourth, working himself into a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Ed Rogers made him pay with a single to left that scored Gillespie, and Allen worked a walk to score another run.
Val Pascucci hit an RBI triple to center to score Russ Adams in the sixth and get the Beavers on the board.
The Aces got the run back in the bottom of the sixth on Hester's RBI single to left.
Putnam was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh for Portland and came around to score on pinch-hitter Matt Antonelli's RBI groundout.
Portland's Matt Buschmann, making an appearance in between starts, pitched the seventh inning and gave up Gotay's solo shot.
The Beavers were able to slice the deficit in half, loading the bases for Putnam, who doubled to left to make it 8-5.
But again the Aces prevented the Beavers from building any momentum, this time with Allen's homer and RBI doubles by Watson and Gotay.
Scott Dohmann recorded the final five outs for his first save with Reno.
The Beavers play the Aces again Wednesday night, at 7:05 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: The Aces scored in six of their eight innings at-bat ... Gotay needed a triple for the Aces' first cycle in team history when he came to bat in the eighth, but instead hit his second double of the night ... left-hander Joe Thatcher was recalled by the Padres earlier in the day.
