Iowa Cubs News Release

The Omaha Royals (39-57) vaulted to an early 9-0 lead, thwarted a middle-inning comeback, and hung on for a 9-6 win over the Iowa Cubs (50-47) in front of 7,777 fans tonight at Principal Park. Tug Hulett was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Royals.

Omaha tagged Iowa starting pitcher Jose Ascanio (2-3) for six runs in 1.2 innings. Ascanio's outing was his shortest of the season and marked the first time he has allowed more than four earned runs in an outing this year. He allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits and one walk. Ascanio left after throwing just 40 pitches.

After Omaha pushed three more runs across in the fifth, the Cubs mounted a comeback. Sam Fuld cut the deficit to 9-2 with his first home run of the season in the fifth inning. Matt Camp delivered a three-run double one inning later that highlighted a four-run sixth for Iowa.

The Omaha bullpen took over in the seventh and put an end to the Cubs' comeback hopes. Doug Wachter threw a scoreless seventh and Carlos Rosa worked the last two innings for his sixth save.

Heath Phillips (6-7) earned the win for Omaha in spite of allowing all six Iowa runs. The Omaha southpaw surrendered six runs on 10 hits in his six innings of work. He walked one and struck out three.

The Cubs will try to earn a split with the Royals when the teams wrap up their four-game set tomorrow night at Principal Park. Left-hander Casey Fossum (1-2, 6.00) will start for Iowa and will oppose Omaha right-hander Brandon Duckworth (2-4, 5.64). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
