Lancaster Stormers News Release
It wasn't as easy as it appeared it would be, but the Lancaster Barnstormers opened the second half with a 7-5 victory over the Newark Bears Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Jason Scobie fired seven shutout innings and was supported by three hits apiece from Lloyd Turner and Michael Campbell in the win. Scobie (4-4) gave up only four singles. He struck out five without walking a batter, though he hit one. During one stretch, the right-hander from LSU retired 14 batters in succession with only one ball clearing the infield.
Lancaster grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first. Turner started the night with a line drive single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by David Housel, who also reached on a throwing error by pitcher Kyle Kobernus (1-2). Matt Watson flied out to center, but L.J. Biernbaum picked up the run with a single through the right side of the infield.
Kobernus kept the Lancaster offense in check until the fifth when he walked Ryan Mulhern on five pitches. Campbell singled into right, chasing Mulhern to third, and Turner drove in the run with a single smashed into center. With Housel batting, catcher Salomon Manriquez attempted to pick Campbell off second and fired the ball into center field. Housel struck out, but Watson picked up the third run with a long sacrifice fly to right center.
Two more runs crossed in the sixth. Jed Morris picked up a walk and moved to third on Gerard Haran's double down the left field line. Mulhern drove Morris home with his eighth sacrifice fly of the season. Campbell followed with a single to left, driving home Haran as Manriquez dropped the throw to the plate.
Aaron Herr and Morris each doubled home a run with two outs in the seventh for the 7-0 lead. Then, the game got interesting.
Former Barnstormer Felix Martinez launched a homer to right off Juan Ovalles to start the eighth, but the rest of that inning passed uneventfully. Ross Peeples had a worse time in the ninth. Carl Everett and Sandy Madera opened the inning with consecutive singles. Manriquez' chopper to the hole at short eluded Turner for an error as Everett scored. Andres Perez grounded into a force play for the first out, but Martinez doubled off the left field wall to cut the Lancaster lead to 7-3.
Nick Abel's first pitch was drilled into the left center field alley by Victor Mercedes for a two-run double, bringing the tying run to the plate. Tike Redman flied to shallow left for the second out, and Abel caught pinch hitter Michael Hernandez looking at a third strike to chalk up his first save.
The Barnstormers are 4-1 on their current road trip which lasts through July 16. Lancaster will host York on Ag Dairy Night on July 17 with fireworks following the game. Tickets are available at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.
