Salem Red Sox News Release

Winston-Salem, NC (July 6, 2009) - Anthony Rizzo cracked his first Advanced-A homer in the first and the Red Sox pitching staff held the Dash at bay the rest of the way in Salem's 4-0 win over Winston-Salem on Monday evening. The three-run homer for Rizzo, his first extra-base hit since joining Salem, came with two outs in the first off Johnnie Lowe and helped the Red Sox avoid a squander following three straight singles and a runner lost at home plate. Righthander Seth Garrison took the mound with a 3-0 lead and only surrendered three hits over five shutout innings, striking out five without walking anyone. Ryne Miller pitched the seventh and eighth, Jose Capellan went into the ninth before giving way to the closer, and Derrick Loop entered a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the ninth, retiring Logan Johnson on a ground ball to first to end it.

Mike Jones, Yamaico Navarro, and Rizzo all finished with two hits each as the 3-4-5 hitters combined to go 6-14. Everyone else in the Red Sox lineup had at least one hit, with the exception of Tim Federowicz, who went 0-3 with a walk. Salem manufactured their fourth run off Lowe in the seventh when Kris Negron led off with a bunt single, stole second, was sacrificed to third, and scored on a wild pitch.

Seth Garrison improved to 3-0 since the All-Star Break and 5-7 overall with five shutout frames for Salem. After back-to-back two out singles in the first inning for Winston, Garrison retired 13 of the final 14 batters. Miller yielded three hits in his two innings but was aided by a double-play ground-out in the sixth and a huge pick-off by Federowicz in the seventh. Capellan retired the side in order in the eighth before loading the bases in the ninth, but Loop came on for his league leading 31st appearance and picked up his 11th save.

The Red Sox, 9-3 to start the second half, bring their full-season record to 41-40, above .500 for the first time since they beat Wilmington on May 21 to become 21-20. The Red Sox fell a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 25-35 on June 10, but have since won 16 of 21 to bounce back.

The Red Sox and Dash meet for game two of the four-game set on Tuesday night, with Casey Kelly set to make what will likely be his final start of the season for Salem. Following Tuesday's game, Kelly will pitch in the Future's Game on Sunday in St. Louis before becoming a shortstop for the remainder of the season. The Dash counter with Jacob Rasner and first pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
