Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals got back on track on Sunday evening, taking the opening game of a three-game series against the Midland RockHounds, with a 7-2 win at Hammons Field.
Mike Folli and Tony Cruz each drove in a pair, while Colt Sedbrook collected his first hits at the Double-A level, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Springfield starting pitcher Lance Lynn (7-2) gave the Cards five innings in earning his seventh win, but struggled with his command.
Midland capitalized on three Lynn walks in the second, taking an early 1-0 lead. Lynn walked the bases loaded with one out, then allowed a run to score on Matt Sulentic's slow ground ball to shortstop.
Springfield scored four times in the third inning, taking the lead for good. Tony Cruz's RBI single tied the game at 1-1 against starter Jason Fernandez (6-7). A passed ball by catcher Josh Donaldson allowed a second run to score, as Pete Kozma plated to give Springfield a 2-1 lead. Cruz would later score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mike Folli, making it 3-1. The Cards capped the inning with a double-steal, as Folli stole second, while Tyler Henley came home, giving the Cards a 4-1 lead.
Midland made it a two-run game in the fourth, as Matt Spencer led off the inning with a single, then scored on a sac fly by Raul Padron, making it 4-2.
Folli delivered with his second RBI of the night in the fifth, as his two-out single brought Henley home, giving the Cards a 5-2 advantage and chasing Fernandez.
Kozma singled home Colt Sedbrook in the sixth and Jim Rapoport scored on Cruz's fielder's choice, putting Springfield up 7-2 against reliever Rocky Roquet.
Tyler Norrick, who took over for Lance Lynn in the sixth, worked a 1-2-3 sixth and then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh for two scoreless innings.
Sam Freeman struck out two of the three hitters he faced in a perfect eighth, then started a 1-6-3 double-play to end the game.
The Cards (5-5 Second Half, 42-37 Overall) look to make it two straight on Monday, sending Trey Hearne (8-1) to the hill against Midland's Graham Godfrey (7-4) at 7:10pm.
