Cubs Fall to the RedHawks

July 1, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

Kevin Richardson delivered an RBI single that broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 14th inning, giving the Oklahoma City RedHawks (39-39) a 1-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs (40-39) Wednesday night at Principal Park. The 1-0 loss was the second in as many nights for the Cubs, who have now lost five straight.

With runners on the corners and two out in the 14th, Richardson delivered a hit into centerfield off Iowa reliever Vince Perkins. The hit fell between Iowa outfielders John-Ford Griffin and Matt Camp to drive in Brandon Boggs with the winning run.

Mike Hinckley (1-1) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win. Warner Madrigal held the Cubs at bay in the bottom of the 14th to earn his eighth save. Iowa reliever John Gaub (0-1) was charged with the loss.

In his first game of a rehab stint with the RedHawks, Josh Hamilton was stymied by Cubs pitching. The All-Star outfielder was 1-for-7 with two strikeouts as Oklahoma City's designated hitter and leadoff batter. His lone hit was a two-out single through the pitcher's box in the 10th inning.

A Principal Park crowd of 9,757 let out a collective gasp when Hamilton launched a fly deep into right field with a runner on and one out in the seventh inning. Cubs outfielder So Taguchi hauled in Hamilton's fly just in front of the right field wall to keep the game scoreless.

Cubs starter Jose Ascanio was the catalyst for an outstanding showing by the Iowa pitching staff. In his first appearance since being optioned from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, the right-hander was solid. He threw four shutout frames, allowing just two hits while striking out seven and walking a pair.

James Russell and Jeff Stevens each threw two scoreless innings in relief of Ascanio. Blake Parker tossed a scoreless ninth inning before Justin Berg worked three scoreless frames. In four games against the RedHawks this season, the Cubs bullpen owns a handsome 0.34 ERA (9 ER, 242 IP) (11/2).

The Cubs and RedHawks meet in the second game of their three-game set at Principal Park tomorrow. Left-hander J.R. Mathes (7-4, 3.80) will pitch for the Cubs and will oppose Oklahoma City right-hander Elizardo Ramirez (4-6, 4.81).

Fans attending the 7:05 p.m. game tomorrow can enjoy the first of two Holiday Fireworks Extravaganza shows at Principal Park this week. A second fireworks show is scheduled to follow the series finale between the Cubs and RedHawks on Friday.

Notes: Tonight's game was the longest at Principal Park since the Cubs pulled out 6-5 win in a 15-inning affair against Omaha on July 2, 2008 ... Darwin Barney made his Triple-A debut Wednesday after he was called up from Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday. Barney played errorless defense at shortstop and went (1-for-5) at the plate ... Matt Craig made his first appearance in an Iowa Cubs uniform since last season after he was acquired from the Florida Marlins earlier this week. Craig started at first base and went (1-for-5).
