
Yankees defeat 'Birds, 5-2

(Staten Island, N.Y.) - The Yankees picked up their second consecutive victory over the IronBirds with a 5-2 win at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Monday evening.
The âBirds (4-6) were out hit 12-to-8, while the Yankees (4-6) struggled defensively with four errors. Aberdeen left eight runners on base and were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Short stop Mike Mooney led the âBirds offensively after collecting his first professional hit in the contest. The University of Florida product went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Starter Colin Allen fell to 0-2 after tossing three innings, giving up three runs with six hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
Gavin Brooks (1-0) earned his first win of the year after throwing 1.1 innings, walking one and fanning two âBirds. Starter Trenton Lare threw 4.2 innings giving up two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Ryan Flannery earned his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.
Jimmy Paredes scored a run in the first inning after a double-play fielder's choice to given the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
The Yankees added a two-run frame in the third with Rob Lyerly and Paredes adding the runs by reaching on with a double and a walk, respectively. Paredes went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a pair of runs scored.
The IronBirds scored their first two runs on a pair of triples. Outfielder Richard D'Oleo led off with a triple in the second inning and would score on a Arthur Bonevacia groundout. Mooney reached on with a one-out triple. He scored in an unconventional way after Ty Kelly struck out, but the put out play was missed by Staten Island catcher Kyle Higashioka, allowing Mooney to score, making it a 3-2 contest.
D'Oleo went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Luke Murton added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run bomb to left field off of reliever Mick Matalliano to give the Baby Bombers a 5-2 lead.
âBirds Reliever Jake Smith tossed three scoreless frames with four strikeouts and two hits allowed.
The âBirds will try to capture the rubber match on Tuesday evening. Aberdeen right-hander Patrick Kantakevich (0-1) will face right-hander Arodys Vizcaino (0-1) for the 7:00 p.m. contest.
