Potomac Nationals News Release
WILMINGTON, De- As the top road team in the Carolina League in the first half of the 2009 season with a record of 23-12, the P-Nats have felt right at home in their opponent's ballparks. With the second half of the season underway, Potomac took to the road to take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks in a three-game set taking game one 6-0 but dropping the second affair 8-7. The rubber game of the series on getaway day had the P-Nats working through traffic on the basepaths and taking advantage of some Wilmington mistakes to take game three 5-2 to win yet another series away from Pfitzner Stadium.
Terrence Engles was the beneficiary of some timely hits from the Nats' bats. Engles (1-2) tossed five innings, dealing with a myriad of Blue Rock baserunners, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out four. It was Engles' first victory in the Carolina League in his ninth start spanning two seasons.
Potomac would draw first blood in the top of the third inning. With runners on first and second, Sean Rooney laced a ground ball through the right side of the infield to score Dan Nelson with the game's first run. Danny Espinosa would tack on a run on a sacrifice fly to give the P-Nats a 2-0 lead.
The Rocks would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Paolo Orlando and Anthony Seratelli, but the Nats would respond in the top of the fifth, taking the run back on another Rooney RBI single.
The Blue Crew would load the bases in the fifth with just one out, but Tim Pahuta threw out Josh Johnson at home plate on a ground ball to third and Engles was able to strike out the Carolina League's second-leading hitter David Lough to end the threat.
Jamar Walton would cut the P-Nats' lead to 3-2 with a sixth-inning single, but the Nats would snatch the momentum back in the top of the seventh. Brian Peacock scored on a wild pitch and Michael Burgess would cue an infield single to score Stephen King to push the Potomac advantage to 5-2.
King would enjoy an odd statistical line, going 0-for-5 but scoring three runs and stealing two bases out of the leadoff spot in the order.
Atahualpa Severino would throw the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three to pick up his tenth save of the season and lower his ERA to 2.73.
Sean Rooney went 3-for-5 with two RBI to raise his average to .302 while Peacock and Francisco Plasencia extended their hitting streaks to seven games.
The P-Nats board the bus for the long trek to Winston-Salem for the start of a four-game series on Sunday evening. First pitch is 5:05 ET and you can hear all the action live on www.potomacnationals.com with Dan McGinn and Anthony Masterson starting with the pregame show at 4:45 ET.
