Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem Red Sox (34-37, 2-0) @ Kinston Indians (27-43, 0-2) Game #72 Grainger Stadium Kinston, NC Road Game #34 Probable Starters: RHP Casey Kelly (1-2, 2.51) vs LHP Russell Young (1-3, 5.36)
Big Innings: Salem has scored five or more runs in an inning 13 times this season and four times in the last eight games . All of the recent damage has been done in the late innings, with six runs in the sixth last Mon- day, five runs in the eighth last Wednesday, seven runs in the sixth on Friday night, and five more in the sev- enth on Thursday in the Sox' demolition of the Indians. In this series opener, Salem scored five runs on three hits and three walks, batting around to break it open. New Faces Contribute To Pair of Red Sox Routs: Salem made a statement to start the second-half 2-0, crush- ing Kinston by a combined 17-0. Salem features four new faces on their second-half roster, including three first half champs from Greenville as well as shortstop Yamaico Navarro, who hit two doubles on opening day, his only game of the first half. The Sox also add a catcher in Tim Federowicz, a first-baseman in Anthony Rizzo, and an outfielder in David Mailman. Rizzo and Mailman combined for five walks on Thursday night, while Federowicz went 3-5 with 2 RBI on Friday.
Early Deficits Plaguing Salem: Salem has only scored the first run 24 times in 71 games, and they have trailed at some point in 59 of their 71 games. So far in the second half, however, the Sox are two-for-two in scoring first and leading throughout.
First-Half Keys to Success: Though Salem finished the first-half five games below .500, a few simple factors have stood out as reasons for victories. When Salem hits a home run, they are 19-6 (13-31 when they don't). Baserunning has also been important, as Salem is 23- 13 when they steal a base (9-24 when they don't). The Sox were undefeated, a perfect 27-0, when leading af- ter eight innings. Conversely, Salem went 1-35 when trailing after eight. Place Jacks First Homer Since April: Red Sox outfielder Jason Place connected on his third home run of the season last night, a ninth inning blast the easily cleared the wall in left. It was Place's first home run in exactly 200 at-bats since he last went yard on April 21.
