Spike Game Notes June 24th

June 24, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) State College Spikes

The State College Spikes finish up a three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tonight at Eastwood Field. The Scrappers have clinched a series victory by winning the first two games. State College now trails in the all-time series, 18-14, and has won just four of 17 games played at Eastwood Field.

-LAST NIGHT: The Spikes suffered their third one-run loss in a row last night as the Scrappers came from behind to win, 2-1, at Eastwood Field. Tony Sanchez went 2-for-3 and scored State College's only run in the third when Kyle Morgan tripled him in to the plate. Sanchez also threw a would-be base-stealer out at second. Michael Felix pitched four scoreless innings in his return to the mound for the Spikes. The southpaw spent most of 2007 as a reliever for State College.

-SPIKES SEND COX BACK OUT TONIGHT: Left-hander Tyler Cox makes his second New York-Penn League start of the year tonight. Cox started Opening Night against Williamsport and was charged with ten runs, eight earned. The southpaw began the year at West Virginia, and spent the final week of the 2008 season with State College.

-SCRAPPERS TAP ANTHONY TO START: The Scrappers also send out a left-hander to start tonight in Ryan Anthony. Anthony signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians after the 2009 Draft last week out of Emporia State. The Overland Park, KS native went 8-3 with a 3.38 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 74 2/3 innings for the Hornets this past spring.

-SANCHEZ TAKES FAREWELL TOUR: This series is the last that Tony Sanchez will play with the Spikes. After attending the banquet for the 2009 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award (an award for which he is a finalist), Sanchez is headed to Single-A West Virginia to continue his professional development. The Boston College alum got the night off last night in the Spikes' defeat.

-ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END: Spikes outfielder David Rubinstein's Spikes record on-base streak ended last night at 24 games after David went 0-for-4 with no walks.
