Tri-City Rallies to Beat Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Tri-City ValleyCats rallied from a 5-2 deficit with two runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings for an 8-6 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Tri-City trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning when they greeted reliever Yunior Novoa with a leadoff double from Sean Barksdale followed by a Brian Kemp RBI triple to tie the game. Kemp then scored the go ahead run on a Ben Orloff sacrifice fly.

The ValleyCats added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth for an 8-5 lead and were able to hold off a Lake Monsters rally in the bottom of the inning. A hit batter and two one-out walks loaded the bases for Vermont before the Lake Monsters got a run back on Jack Walker's RBI infield single. But as the potential winning run at the plate, Dani Arias hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Vermont had scored four runs on four hits in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Lake Monsters loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, then Francisco Soriano laced a two-run double to left center to give Vermont a 3-2 lead. Vermont added two more runs in the inning on an RBI bunt single from Brian Pruitt, who then pulled off a double steal with Soriano scoring for the 5-2 lead.

Lake Monsters starter Jack McGeary, making his first start with Vermont after joining the team from Single-A Hagerstown, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings. He gave up the two runs in the second inning and then worked out of a bases loaded jam in the third inning.

Tri-City starter Kyle Godfrey gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits over three innings, while reliever Antonio Noguera (1-0) tossed four scoreless innings with three hits allowed and four strikeouts to earn the win.

Jeff Hulett was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a double for Tri-City (2-2), while Barksdale was 3-for-5 with a run, double and two RBI. Soriano was 2-for-3 with a run and the two-run double for the Lake Monsters, while Dan Killian was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Vermont (2-4) begins a three-game series with the Oneonta Tigers at Centennial Field beginning on Thursday night at 7:05 pm with Graham Hicks slated to start the game for the Lake Monsters.
