
Vipers Walk-Off With Win

For the first time this season the Calgary Vipers won a game in the bottom of the ninth inning as they defeated the Victoria Seals 4-3 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers went up 3-0 in the game only to have the Seals once again comeback and tie the game but the Snakes responded with a run in their final at-bats. With the win Calgary improves to 15-8 on the season and remains in first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Mac Suzuki (1-0) recorded the win in the game as he pitched two and two-third innings scoreless while only allowing one hit and striking out two. Hideki Nagasaka started the game for the Vipers and went a quality six and a third innings giving up three runs. Javier Garcia (0-1) picked up the loss in giving up the last run of the game.
Mark Okano had a big night at the plate going three-for-five with the game winning run batted in.
The first runs of the game were scored in the bottom of the fifth inning as Calgary's Colin Moro singled and Drew Miller hammered his league high eighth home run of the season. Rick Guarno followed by walking, Rob Recuenco laid down a perfect bunt single, and Nelson Castro knocked in his league leading 30th run with a base hit for a 3-0 lead.
Victoria tied the game up at 3-3 in the seventh inning with three runs of their own as Wilver Perez singled, Carlos Duncan homered, Jamar Hill walked, Chris Van Rossum collected a base hit, and Brett Flowers hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
In the bottom of the ninth inning Jorge Mejia walked, moved all the way to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Okano run batted in single for the 4-3 victory.
This three game series concludes with the rubber-match on Wednesday June 16th at 2:35 PM as the two teams will play a special matinee game with a Calgary Stampeders game to follow in the evening across the parking lot. Joe Sergent (2-1) will make his sixth start of the season in a left-handed rematch of last Friday night's duel with Isaac Hess (3-0). The aces of their respected staffs will meet again with Sergent coming in at a 2.56 earned run average and Hess posting a 1.97 E.R.A. after picking up a win against Calgary his last time out.
