Red Bull New York News Release
BULLS HOST SOUNDERS SATURDAY: The New York Red Bulls return to Giants Stadium after a three-game road trip when they take on Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday at 7:30 PM ET (TV: MSG; Radio: WADO 1280 AM) in their only home game in June.
New York is coming off a 2-1 loss to Toronto FC on Saturday and is now 2-10-3 (9 pts.) at the halfway point of the season. They host a Seattle Sounders FC squad that is currently in third place in the Western Conference on 20 points with a 5-3-5 record. After going winless in six-straight games, the Sounders rebounded with a 2-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at Qwest Field. Designated Player Freddie Ljungberg gave the hosts the lead in the 42nd minute and Fredy Montero doubled their advantage 14 minutes after halftime. Darren Huckerby pulled one back for the visitors. Seattle has a busy week, as they are facing D.C. United at home on Wednesday at 10:30 PM ET.
Montero leads the MLS expansion Sounders in scoring with five goals while chipping in with three assists. Nate Jaqua has three goals and four assists while goalkeeper Kasey Keller is having a strong season, posting a 0.71 goals against average and four shutouts. This is the second time that the two teams will face off this season. On March 19, opening day for both clubs and Seattle's first-ever MLS regular season match, Seattle blitzed by New York, 3-0, with a pair of Montero goals and a Brad Evans strike. Seattle is coached by Sigi Schmid, who led the Columbus Crew to their first MLS Cup Final win over New York last season.
RED BULLS LOSE TO TORONTO FC, 2-1: A second half New York Red Bulls flurry and Albert Celades' first career MLS goal was not enough to overcome a two-goal deficit, as the Red Bulls fell to Toronto FC, 2-1, on Saturday night at BMO Field. The match wrapped up a three-game road trip for New York.
Toronto FC took the lead three minutes in. Pablo Vitti had space in the box and tried to pass it off and it hit off the arm of Seth Stammler, who was on the ground. Referee Jair Marrufo pointed to the penalty spot. Amado Guevara's ensuing penalty kick was saved by Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero, who dove to his left, but Sam Cronin was on hand to knock the rebound into the empty net.
Later in the half, Red Bulls midfielder Nick Zimmerman tested Toronto FC's Stefan Frei with a long range blast that the goalkeeper caught. In the 31st minute, forward Macoumba Kandji gathered an Alfredo Pacheco cross and tried a bicycle kick that Frei saved. Toronto FC had a chance of its own minutes later, as Danny Dichio nearly put the hosts 2-0 up when his header from a Guevara free kick was tipped over the bar by Cepero.
With nine minutes left in the half, Juan Pablo Angel had the visitors' best chance up to that point. Angel had space on the right wing and raced into the box before firing a shot that Frei tipped over the bar. Soon after, an open Celades almost got a free shot on goal from the center of the 18-yard box. However, Adrian Serioux stuck his foot out to block the shot.
Toronto FC went two-ahead with two minutes left in the half. Guevara had the ball in the center of the field and played it over-the-top to an onsides Vitti, who went in alone on goal. Cepero was able to poke the ball away, but a trailing Dichio was there to blast it in from outside of the penalty box for his third goal of the season.
New York had a pair of opportunities to put their name on the scoreboard seven minutes in. Zimmerman dispossessed Serioux deep in Toronto's half and found Kandji, who could not get his shot on frame. Jorge Rojas was there to try to put it on net and his shot was deflected away.
The Red Bulls scored their first road goal of the season in the 54th minute. After a Rojas attempt on net was cleared, Angel collected it at the top of the penalty box and slid it to Celades. Celades took a touch past a defender and hit a left-footed shot from 12 yards out that Frei could only touch into his net.
The game opened up as Dichio nearly extended Toronto's lead back to two when his header moments later flashed by the left post. Stammler had space on the right and crossed it to Angel, who rose above his defender and nodded a shot wide.
Cepero kept the Red Bulls in the match in the 66th minute, first punching away a Kevin Harmse blast before saving a Serioux effort seconds after. In the 73rd minute, Dwayne De Rosario tried a short angle free kick that Cepero, who was making his first start since May 8, tipped over the bar.
New York almost tied the game up with 16 minutes to play when Angel got behind the Toronto defense and chipped it over Frei and into the net. However, the linesman ruled that he was offside. Five minutes later, Frei hit a poor clearance to Kandji, whose ensuing shot was caught by the goalkeeper.
In the 85th minute, Rojas crossed it into an open Stammler and his attempt went high. Four minutes later, John Wolyniec nearly headed in a Rojas free kick but Frei was out to punch it away.
Saturday's match was originally scheduled for Aug. 9, but it was moved by Major League Soccer last month. Red Bulls defender Kevin Goldthwaite was a late scratch after he felt discomfort from a left foot injury suffered earlier in the day. Carlos Mendes replaced him in the lineup.
RED BULLS TO HOST PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS DAY: The Red Bulls will join the Prostate Conditions Education Council on Saturday to launch a new prostate cancer awareness campaign, Team Up Against Prostate Cancer on Saturday starting at 5:00 PM ET prior to New York's match against Seattle Sounders FC at Giants Stadium. Former U.S. Men's National Team standout Marcelo Balboa will be on hand prior to the game Saturday, as the Red Bulls and PCEC will have a tent and table at the bottom of the Gate D spiral at Giants Stadium. Prostate health-related educational information will be distributed to fans and they will have the opportunity to meet Balboa prior to the game.

Celades has played in nine games for New York, starting in seven. He has also tallied one assist after missing the early part of the season due to paperwork and injury issues. GOLDTHWAITE MISSES FIRST: After being one of two players to have played and started in every game for New York this season, defender Kevin Goldthwaite was a late scratch for the Red Bulls' 2-1 loss to Toronto FC last Saturday after sustaining a left foot injury earlier in the day. Angel is fourth in MLS with 1,311 minutes played.

Pacheco and Rojas returned to the lineup in last Saturday's 2-1 loss to Toronto FC.
Boyens was called by the New Zealand National Team for their participation in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. Boyens joined New Zealand on June 1 for a camp in preparation for the international competition in South Africa. The All Whites had friendlies against Tanzania on June 3, Botswana on June 6, and Italy on June 10. New Zealand dropped a 2-1 decision to Tanzania and tied Botswana, 0-0. The Kiwis also lost, 4-3, to Italy. Boyens played the full 90 minutes against Italy. Boyens also played against Botswana.
On Sunday, the All Whites lost, 5-0, to Spain in their first group match - a game in which Boyens played the entire match and earned his 11th cap. Pacheco has 68 caps for the Salvadoran National Team and has scored six goals.
Rojas was unavailable for the Red Bulls from June 5 until June 11, as he was called up by the Venezuelan National Team for their upcoming CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier. However, due to groin tightness, Rojas was released by the Venezuela Soccer Federation and returned to the team on June 10. Rojas played the full 90 minutes for New York last Saturday against Toronto FC. Venezuela will host Uruguay on June 10 in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela and tied 2-2. RED BULLS-TORONTO FC POST-GAME: Here was the reaction after the Red Bulls-Toronto FC match on June 13:
NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS OSORIO
Thoughts on game... "I think we deserved at least a point. The guys, especially in the second half really took the game to them and basically we limited them to - two shots from about 20 yards out one from (Adrian) Serioux, and one from (Kevin) Harmse and everything else I think we controlled the game and dominated the game. It goes without saying that when things don't go your way, they just don't go your way. We got a penalty in the second minute of the game, obviously that was a big blow to us considering the circumstances but the boys kept going and played very well."
NEW YORK GOALKEEPER DANNY CEPERO
Thoughts on their fun of bad luck... "It was a tough situation, you know it comes down to desire and belief and a number of plays in the first half, the penalty included. Myself included to believe that I can make that save with the run of bad luck and things that we've given up and goals that have come against us I think. Sometimes there's a lack of faith and that trickles down the team that shows itself on the field sometimes and unfortunately we've been punished in those instances."
On facing Guevara on the penalty... "You try not to over think it - you know he has a reputation of being a very good striker of the ball, corner's free kicks, certainly penalty kicks and I try not to think about those things and just on instinct and what you feel in there. You know where he's going to go on a penalty and just in general being aware that he is human and the ball's going to come to you and you just have to be aware and ready for things to happen."
NEW YORK MIDFIELDER SETH STAMMLER
On if they can something positive out of the 2nd half start... "We're got going to be celebrating it but you know it shows that we can play with that kind of fight and possession and hopefully that translates into the next game against Seattle and maybe we can get an early goal next time and put the other team under pressure."
RED BULL ACADEMY UPDATE: JUNE 15
A LOOK BACK: U20s: The U20s improved to 3-0-0 on the season with a pair of wins last week.
On Wednesday, June 10, the U20 Red Bulls scored two penalty kicks en route to a 4-1 win over the U20 NJ Rangers. Steven Amaya (New York, NY) and Sam Archer (Springfield Gardens, NY) each converted from the penalty spot, and Mario Rios (Denville, NJ) and Andrew Cuevas (Wayne, NJ) rounded out the scoring as the U20s improved to 2-0 on the season. Sheldon Parkinson (Bronx, NY) went the distance in goal.
"We had a lot of possession in the attacking third of the field," said U20 head coach Rob Elliott. "We were awarded two PK's due to the amount of pressure and time we spent in their penalty area. It was a matter of time until they fouled us in the box."
On Saturday night, June 13, the Red Bulls traveled up to Connecticut and earned a 2-1 decision against U20 Beachside. Walter Hines (Brooklyn, NY) got the Red Bulls on the board first and Anthony Vazquez (Belford, NJ) followed his own rebound to net the winner with four minutes to go. Parkinson earned his second win of the week in goal.
"Beachside made things difficult for us tonight, and it was a hard fought road victory." said Elliott.
U18s: The Red Bull U18s did not play this week.
U16s: The Red Bull U16s did not play this week as they prepare for the US Development Academy League playoffs.
U15s: The U15 Red Bulls completed a successful pre-academy trip to Bethesda, Maryland with a solid 2-0 win over U15 Bethesda on Sunday, June 14 in US Club Northeast Pre Academy League action. Fumio Himeo (Ft. Lee, NJ) opened up the scoring in the 24th minute as he slotted home a perfectly timed Conor Gleba (Midland Park, NJ) pass. Gleba provided the helper on the second goal as well, this time finding Travis Wantchekon (Brooklyn, NY) inside the penalty area for a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute. Max Brown (Manhattan, NY) and Thomas Bull (Skillman, NJ) combined for five saves to preserve the shutout.
U14s: The U14 Red Bulls were defeated, 3-0, by U14 Bethesda on Sunday, June 14, in US Club Soccer Pre Academy League play. The Red Bulls started the game brightly, but failed to convert any chances. Against the run of play Bethesda opened the scoring and added another just before the half. Bethesda added another midway through the second half to round out the scoring.
"We moved the ball around and keep possession well at times, but we didn't have that killer instinct about us in front of goal," said U14 head coach Cris da Silva.
