Buchholz Dances With Perfection, Red Sox Shutout Bats 3-0

Louisville, KY - On this Memorial Day, the Louisville Bats and the Pawtucket Red Sox took the day to acknowledge all current and former members of the military. Clay Buchholz danced with perfection for the Red Sox en route to a 3-0 victory over the Bats. Buchholz took a perfect game into the ninth inning before Danny Richar smacked a single past third baseman Michael Griffin on the first pitch of the inning. After the Richar hit, Buchholz was given a standing ovation from the crowd of 8,848 fans at Louisville Slugger Field.

Buchholz (3-0, 1.30) finished with a complete game shutout. Richar was the only runner to reach base the entire day as he faced just one over the minimum. He also struck out seven batters and walked none, cruising to the win for the Red Sox.

He was looking for his second professional no-hitter. On September 1, 2007 for the Boston Red Sox, Buchholz no-hit the Baltimore Orioles in his second career Major League start.

With a scoreless game in the top of the sixth, the Red Sox finally broke through on Bats' starter Ramon Ramirez. After Chris Carter grounded out to begin the inning, Dusty Brown and Paul McAnulty hit back-to-back solo homeruns, giving the Red Sox the lead 2-0.

Brown finished the game 3-for-4 for the Red Sox.

Pawtucket was able to tack on another run in the seventh to give them a 3-0 lead. Gil Velazquez led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Travis Denker. Freddy Guzman, who entered the game in the bottom of the fifth for starter Mark Kotsay, laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners 90 feet. Velazquez then scored when Sean Danielson hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Ramirez (0-4, 4.80) took the loss for the Bats, giving up two runs on seven hits. He struck out one batter.

Louisville and Pawtucket will play again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Starting pitchers for that match-up will be LHP Adam Pettyjohn (0-5, 4.74) for the Bats and LHP Kris Johnson (2-5, 6.69) for the Red Sox. Come out to the game and enjoy family night with $1 hot dogs and $1 Pepsi's.
