Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC (May 22, 2009) - Logan Johnson's solo homer in the last of the eight capped an eight-run rally for the Dash, giving the home team an 8-7 come-from-behind triumph against the shocked Salem Sox on Friday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Trailing 7-0 after three innings, Winston scored one in the fourth, six in the seventh, and one in the eighth, making a winner of Santo Luis who threw two scoreless innings out of the Dash bullpen. Winston relievers combined for six and two-thirds shutout frames after Johnny Lowe struggled mightily, pulling Lowe off the hook in exchange for a dramatic victory.
Early on, it looked like a laugher in favor of the Sox, who scored four times before the second out was recorded in the top of the first inning. Chih-Hsien Chiang and Jason Place each chipped in RBI doubles to make it 2-0, and Mike Jones connected for a two-run homer off Lowe to make it 4-zip in the first. Salem added one in the second and two more in the third on Kris Negron's two-run double, and the Sox had a lead reminiscent of a walking stick through three innings.
But the Dash, despite scrapping just one unearned run off Salem starter Eammon Portice through six innings, persevered. With Portice on the mound to begin the seventh, Lee Cruz greeted him with a solo homer, making the score 7-2. Portice yielded a single and another walk before he departed after six-plus innings. Kyle Fernandes took over and was pounded, eventually yielding the game tying RBI double to Brent Morel. An inning later, Ryne Miller gave up the go-ahead homer to Johnson. Though the Red Sox put two runners on with one out in the ninth, Luis induced a game-ending double-play ball off the bat of Che-Hsuan Lin to end a frustrating night for Salem.
The win for the Dash brings them within a half game of the first place Red Sox, whose record evens at 21-21. Game two of the series, with first place on the line, will take place on Saturday night at 7:00, with Kyle Weiland opposing Daniel Hudson in a battle of righties.
