Canadiens Sign Defensemen Ander Benoit and P.K. Subban to Contracts

MONTREAL, QC - Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today that the club has signed defenceman Andre Benoit to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2009-2010 season and defenceman P.K. Subban to a three-year contract (2009-2010 to 2011-2012). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Benoit, 25, spent last season playing for Sodertalje SK in the Swedish Elite League where he led the team's defencemen in scoring with 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) and had 34 penalty minutes in 54 games. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound defenceman played in two seasons with the Bulldogs from 2005-2007 registering 57 points (17 goals, 40 assists) and 101 penalty minutes in 134 regular season games. The native of St-Albert, Ontario won the 2007 Calder Cup with Hamilton totaling 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) in 22 post-season games. Benoit played his junior career with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, winning the 2003 Memorial Cup with the Rangers and being named to the league's First All-Star Team in 2004-2005 after leading all OHL defencemen in points with 77 (24 goals, 53 assists) in 67 games.

Subban, 20, completed his fourth season with the Belleville Bulls of the OHL this past year. The 6-foot, 202-pound defenceman was tied for second among OHL defencemen in points with 76 (14 goals, 62 assists) while ranking second on the Bulls in penalty minutes with 94. The native of Toronto, Ontario played in 17 post-season games with Belleville in the 2009 OHL playoffs, posting 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) and 22 penalty minutes before being eliminated in the OHL Conference Finals by the Brampton Battalion. Subban compiled a total of 191 points (42 goals, 149 assists) and 353 penalty minutes in 234 regular season games with Belleville from 2005-2009. He also played in 56 playoff contests with the Bulls registering 51 points (16 goals, 35 assists) and 78 penalty minutes. Montreal's 2nd round, 43rd overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft won his second consecutive gold medal with Team Canada at the 2009 World Junior Championships in January. Subban led all skaters in the tournament with a plus-12 rating and was tied for first among defencemen in points with nine (three goals, six assists) in six games.
