Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - With a runner on third in the ninth inning Timmy Rodriguez hit a bloop to centerfield and Anthony Gose, on a full dive, caught the ball to secure a 5-4 victory for the Lakewood BlueClaws in game two of their series with the Hickory Crawdads.
The first inning was a big struggle for Crawdads (16-14) starter Jake Brigham as he allowed three runs while only allowing one hit. Anthony Gose had the hit, an infield hit, while three batters walked and two were hit. The Crawdads also made three errors in the inning.
The BlueClaws (16-13) added a run in the third as Jim Murphy scored on an RBI single by Troy Hanzawa, this was not his only important hit of the day. The Crawdads then began their comeback with a run in each inning from the fourth to the seventh and they tied the game up at four.
In the seventh, the BlueClaws third baseman Travis Mattair got out of a slump with a one-out base hit before Zach Collier looped a single to left. After a fly out, Hanzawa was up and smashed a double to the deepest part of the park that got lodged in a sign for a ground-rule double. Mattair scored to take a 5-4 lead and Collier was brought back to third. The ball was hit more than 400 feet to the opposite field and would have been gone in any other park.
Jesus Sanchez, in his sixth start as a professional, looked good once again at home as he struck out eight hitters over five innings and allowed two runs in five innings. He got the no decision as Ryan Arial came in and worked an inning and allowed a run as well as Ryan Bergh (2-1) who went two innings and allowed a run before BJ Rosenberg came on in the ninth to try and close out the game. Rosenberg allowed a leadoff double to Erik Morrison before escaping with his fourth save of the season.
Brigham went only two outs into the third before being relieved by Fabio Castillo (0-2), who used a fastball in the mid-90s to work four innings, only allowing one run and striking out six. Tyler Tufts then closed the game out and went the final four outs.
The BlueClaws will be back in action on Monday at 6:35 pm in game three of the series and game seven of their eight game homestand. Righty Jon Velasquez (5-1) will look for his league-leading sixth win as he will be opposed by righty Carlos Pimentel (1-1).
