Salem RidgeYaks News Release
(Salem, VA) - The Red Sox received three hits apiece from Jon Hee and Ryan Kalish as Salem earned a much-needed win on Sunday at Lewis-Gale Field. Trailing through six innings, Salem tallied two each in the seventh and eighth innings to prevail 7-4 and avoid being swept by the Hillcats. With three hitless innings out of the bullpen, Kyle Fernandes earned his first victory of the season in relief of Dave McKae.
Trailing 4-3, the Red Sox loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh inning when Kris Negron, Hee, and Kalish all singled. Despite not hitting the ball out of the infield the rest of the frame, Salem scored the tying and go-ahead runs to lead 5-4 on a Place infield single off Pedro Alvarez' glove at third base and a 5-4-3 double-play by Chih-Hsien Chiang that plated a run from third. In the eighth inning, Hee came through again with a two-out, two-run double down the right field line that scored Jered Stanley and Zak Farkes to provide a pair of insurance runs for the Red Sox.
Lynchburg and Salem traded symmetrical scoring lines through the first five innings. Nobody scored in the first before each team tallied two in the second. Hillcats left-fielder Jared Keel connected for a two-run homer off McKae in the top of the frame. In the bottom, Mike Jones drilled an RBI double scoring one. Farkes' ground-out plated another to knot the score at two. After a scoreless third inning, each team scrapped another in the fourth, Lynchburg using a solo homer by Kris Watts, while Jones and Farkes each doubled in the bottom half to tie it at three.
Although the Hillcats used consecutive doubles in the fifth from Matt Hague and Miles Durham to take the 4-3 lead, Salem teed off on the Lynchburg bullpen over the final third, scoring two off Chi-Hung Cheng and two more off RJ Rodriguez. Cheng absorbed the defeat, his first of the season that brought his record to 3-1.
With the win, the Red Sox improved to 16-15, inching to within a game of first-place Kinston. Salem now hits the road for a brief three-game trip to Potomac, beginning Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM at Pfitzner Stadium.
