Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Salem defeated the Hillcats 7-4 at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Sunday afternoon to deny Lynchburg's bid for a series sweep. The loss also snapped Lynchburg's season-high five-game win streak.

The Hillcats jumped out to an early lead when Jared Keel blasted a two-run home run, his first dinger of the 2009 season, in the top of the second to put Lynchburg in front 2-0.

Salem responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. The Red Sox connected for three consecutive base hits -singles by Chih-Hisen Chiang and Luis Exposito and a double by Michael Jones - off Lynchburg starter Paul Mildren. Jones' double plated Chiang and enabled Exposito to advance to third base. After Jered Stanley struck out, Zak Farkes drove in Exposito with an RBI groundout to even the score at 2-2.

Lynchburg regained the lead when Kris Watts belted his third home run of the season in the top of the fourth with nobody on and two out. The solo blast gave the Hillcats a 3-2 advantage.

The Red Sox answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jones laced a one-out double to right field and later scored when Farkes delivered a two-bagger to right, which tied the game at 3-3.

Lynchburg took its third lead of the game when Matt Hague and Miles Durham hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the sixth. Durham's double plated Hague and gave the Hillcats a 4-3 edge.

Salem seized its first lead of the series in the bottom of the seventh. Lynchburg reliever Chi-Hung Cheng surrendered four consecutive singles to start the inning. Jason Place's base hit, the final single in that stretch, drove in Kris Negron to even the score at 4-4. Chiang hit into a double play with the bases loaded, which allowed Jon Hee to score from third and give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead.

The Red Sox added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when Hee ripped a two-run double off Hillcats reliever R. J. Rodriguez to seal Salem's 7-4 victory.

Cheng (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Lynchburg. Kyle Fernandes (1-0) picked up his first victory in 2009 for Salem.

The Hillcats hit the road for three games at Winston-Salem, beginning with Tuesday's game, which is slated for a 12:00 p.m. start. Tune in to AM 1000 for all the live action beginning at 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday.
