Texas League Update

Published on May 4, 2009 under Texas League (TL1) News Release

Player of the Week, April 27-May 3, 2009

Danny Putnam, Midland

.583 average (14-for-24) 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 9 runs scored,

4 doubles, .630 on base percentage, 1.000 slugging percentage

Outfielder Danny Putnam finished this past week in the Texas League's top two in batting average, runs scored, doubles, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. That was good enough to earn the veteran 26-year-old slugger the league's Player of the Week award. It his his second such award, after closing out the 2006 season with five home runs in the season's final week.

Drafted by Oakland as a compensatory first round pick out of Stanford University in 2004, Putnam is showing signs of resurgance as he tries to return to the Bay Area as a member of the Athletics. He was able to get to The Show in both 2006 and 2007, belting a home run on May 10, 2007 in a 3-for-4 performance against the Kansas City Royals. Two days later he was sent back to the minors, his lone home run coming on his final Major League swing.

After toiling through injury-marred seasons the past three years, Putnam is finally healthy and his numbers are showing vitality as well. In what could be his first 100-game season since 2005, he's batting a robust .341 and leading the Texas League in home runs (seven) and runs scored (26) through 22 games. If he keeps up that pace, he'll give the A's a good reason to give him one more shot at the big league level.

Pitcher of the Week, April 27-May 3, 2009

Will Inman, San Antonio

2-0 record, 0.82 ERA 11.0 innings, 6 hits, 3 walks, 12 strikeouts

San Antonio's Will Inman has been named the Texas League's Pitcher of the Week for April 27-May 3, following a stellar two-start performance over the past seven days. It is Inman's second Pitcher of the Week honor after taking home the hardware during the first week of the 2008 season.

Inman started strong in a dominant effort at home against Frisco on April 27, allowing just four hits in six scoreless innings while striking out seven RoughRiders. He followed that up with another winning performance on May 2, this time in the hitter-friendly Citibank Ballpark in Midland, giving up just one run on two hits in five innings of work. He was the only starting pitcher to defeat Midland in the week.

Inman, now in his second full season in the Texas League, is making the most of his experience in the circuit. He has lowered his walk rate from 4.7 to 1.9 per nine innings, showing signs of living up to the promise of his 2007 Baseball America Top 100 ranking. The Virginia native has also buckled down under pressure, allowing opposing hitters a meager .118 batting average (2-for-17) with runners on base and two outs.

The San Diego Padres acquired Inman in a 2007 deadline deal with the Brewers for relief pitcher Scott Linebrink, who has since signed with the Chicago White Sox. At the time of the trade, the 20-year-old Inman was struggling with a 5.45 in the Southern League, but turned things around once he reached San Antonio and has become one of the Missions' most dependable starters ever since. Now 22, Inman could be close to taking his game beyond the Texas League. His above-average command and a lack of depth at the big-league level could mean a promotion to Triple-A Portland or beyond before the close of the 2009 season.
