
Manatees Walk Their Way to Victory Over Cubs

MELBOURNE - The Brevard County Manatees (13-6) used eight walks to take down the Daytona Cubs (9-10), 5-2. Cubs starter Rafael Dolis (0-3) could not find the zone as he walked the first four batters he faced and six in his three and two-thirds innings of work. Manatees starter Mike Jones (3-0) surrendered just four hits in his seven innings of work.
The Manatees turned the four walks in the first inning into two runs before designated hitter Steffan Wilson sent a Dolis offering over the right-center field wall in the second inning. The solo shot was the second home run of the season for Wilson and gave the Mantees a 3-0 lead.
The game stayed 3-0 as Jones faced the minimum through six innings. However, n the seventh the tide turned in favor of the Cubs as Jones walked left fielder Jonathan Wyatt to lead off the inning and Marwin Gonzalez took advantage. The switch hitter hit a no-doubter to right center, his first home run of the season, to make it 2-1. The Manatees put the game away in the eighth Cubs pitching again let a runner get on base with a walk. After two hits and a sacrifice fly, the score was pushed to 5-2.
The Cubs and Manatees will wrap up the four-game home-and-home series tomorrow night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. It will be the lefty James Leverton on the hill for Daytona against right-hander Amaury Rivas for Brevard County. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and the gates will open at 6:00 p.m. It will be the second Thirsty Thursday of the season presented by Arena Sports Bar & Café and The VYB 103.3. Twelve-ounce beers and Coke products are only $1.
