Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER -- After six straight games at Roger Dean Stadium, some members of the Fort Myers Miracle may be looking for a change of scenery, but not starter Mike McCardell. In two starts, including Wednesday's 5-1 victory, he's allowed just six hits and one run in 13 innings, with a walk and 10 strikeouts.
The Miracle (12-7) won the series against the Palm Beach Cardinals (9-10) with a 5-1 score in Wednesday's finale. Fort Myers held on to first place in the Florida State League South and split the six-game road trip. McCardell threw brilliantly for the second straight start, the only blemish a solo home run to left by Curt Smith in the bottom of the fourth. McCardell (2-2) finished with a line of 7 IP, 1 R, 0 BB, and 4 SO.
After the homer, Fort Myers scored five unanswered, starting with a four-run sixth inning. With no one out and the bases loaded, Steve Singleton drove a double to deep left, scoring two. A Chris Parmelee sacrifice fly and Mark Dolenc RBI single added the other two of the frame, and the Miracle tacked on another in the top of the eighth on a Dolenc single combined with a throwing error on shortstop Pete Kozma.
Nick Additon (0-1) took the loss and blown save with a line of 2.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, and 20 SO in relief, while Santos Arias finished the game for McCardell with a scoreless two innings.
The Miracle host the Charlotte Stone Crabs at Hammond Stadium Thursday night at 7:05. Carlos Gutierrez (0-0, 0.50) faces Darin Downs (3-0, 2.29).
